PAIN
»Coming Home«
OUT:September9th, 2016
Line-up: / PAIN online:“That'sme, designedto piss youoffˮ- whenPeter Tägtgrenisascendingfrom the depths of hislegendaryAbyss Studiototake the microphone, a littlemusicalrevolutionisinevitable. BecausewhatelsewouldyouexpectfromHYPOCRISY'sdeath metal veteran, who not onlyplaysindustrial metal withPAIN, but isconsideredtobeone of the mostinfluentialproducers in the metal scene (DIMMU BORGIR, CHILDREN OF BODOM, SABATON etc.), and just recentlylaunchedhiscontroversialprojectLINDEMANN in partnershipwithRAMMSTEIN'sfrontmanTill.
Since the beginning of hiscareer in the early90s, the Swedishallrounderhasenjoyeddivinginto the extreme and hasgrowntobe an untameableforce. But thisisexactlywhatmakeshim so fascinating. Taboos, creativestagnationorgenreboundarieshaveneverexisted in the world of the 46-year-old mastermind. And, of course, Peter Tägtgren wandered the same unexploredpathswhen the time cametoforge»Coming Home«, the 8th studiorelease of the industrialinstitutionPAIN. However, the path was long and winding and therefore, the writingprocessfor the follow-up of 2011's »YouOnly Live Twice«wasn't all fun and games - but Peter Tägtgren iswellpreparedfor the fight:
“Sometimesyou pull yourhair out and laysleeplessallnightlong, becauseyoucan'tfigure out thisonechorusordon'tknowhowto finish a certainsong,ˮadmitssinger and axemanPeter. “That's just me: When I diveintoit, there'snoending in sight. It's a self-destructivemechanism. But I wantperfection - or I don'twantit at all.ˮ
Therefore, itisnowonder, thatPAIN deliver a revolutionary mix of styles on thisnewrelease - bizarre alternative metal meets electronic melodies - and, in addition, the bandweavesomespectacular orchestral arrangementsinto the tracks on »Coming Home«, withoutriskinganycheesymomentsoroverloading the songs. The resultaretenhighlyaddictive metal hymnswith massive depth and experimentation. Especiallywith the orchestratedparts, PAINentered a newera and seekedassistancefromCARACH ANGREN'sClemens “Ardekˮ Wijers, whoaddedsomemagical final touchestoPeter'sbombasticsongwriting. But PAIN also allow the albumtobreathewithbeautifulacousticguitarintrosappearinghand in handwithstormymoments, showing the band at the zenith of theircreativity.
Whenitcomestoguestmusicians, »Coming Home«rolls out a redcarpet: On drums, Peter's 17-year-old sonSebastian Tägtgren delivers an impressiveguestappearance and for the song'Call Me', SABATON'sJoakim Brodénjoins the teamforsometypicallyrawwarriorvocals. But a PAIN releasewouldn'tbe a typicalmasterpiecewithoutsomeenthrallinglyrics and fascinatingtopics: On the callboy-singalong'Call Me'or'Final Crusade', the band crawl through the deepestcorners of society and the human mind, while'Absinthe-Phoenix Rising'isbased upon an incident in LeipzigduringPAIN's tour withNIGHTWISH, where the bandwereattacked and beatup after leaving an Absinthe bar. And of course, lovers of mystery and conspiracytheories also gettheirmoney'sworthwith'Black Knight Satellite', just like on manypreviousHYPOCRISY releases:
“Nikola Tesla, whoinvented the lightbulb, electricity and otherstuff, thoughtthat he heardbeepingsoundsfromspace,ˮPeter explains the storythatinspired the song.“It was around the year 1899 and itseemed like a messagetohim, a hiddencode. He was the firstonetodiscoverit, but in the 1950s, whenhumansstartedtogointospace, theyheard the same noises and found out: Thereissomesignalfrom a satellite out there... but itisn'tours. And astheystartedtheirresearch, theyfound out, thatpeoplehadbeentalkingaboutthisphenomenonforaround 13.000 years. The story of this so-called 'Black Knight Satellite' isveryfascinatingtome - but whetheritistrueor not... I don'tknow. But itdefinitelyinspiredmetowritetheselyrics.ˮ
Fitting the alienconspiracy and spacetheme, PAIN teamedupwithStefan Heilemannfor an obscure and spectacularalbumcover, after the German artisthadalreadyproducedbreathtakingartworksforLINDEMANNand EPICA.
So take a deepbreath, beforeyou jump intothissea of industrial metal, thunderousorchestraarrangements and thrillingconspiracytheories - and Swedes, whoare just designedto piss you off, in theirmost elegant way.
