Pesticides and Toxic Chemicals Control Board

The Board commenced its training programme for the year 2010. The programme envisaged a target audience of 1500 persons taking from the agriculture growing communities across the country.

The trainings targeted farmers and farmhands within the sugar, rice and other crops sectors in regions 2,3,4,5,6 and 10. Participants were exposed to the safe techniques of handling, transporting, storing, spraying and disposal of Pesticides.

The trainings included safe techniques and practices when using rodenticides in an integrated approach to control rodents affecting farmers’ crops in region 6 and the proper use of household pesticides for the community of Ituni in region 10.

The trainings were conducted in conjunction with Ministry of Agriculture Extension Department, Crops Development Support Services, National Agricultural Research Institute, Guyana Rice Development Board and Guyana Marketing Corporation with representatives from these agencies making informed presentations relating to their organizations. Also specialized presentations in pest and disease management and crop fertilizing were conducted in locations where feedback requested these training.

A total of one thousand, one hundred and twenty (1120) persons have been trained as at the end of April.

The Pesticides Board presentation covers the importance of pesticides usage in crop production. Farmers were exposed to the various types of pesticides, their composition and mode of action. The presentation also covers the necessary protection that farmers need to take when applying pesticides relative to proper techniques and protective wear.

The following materials were distributed to participants:

  1. Booklets on the Safe Use and Management of Pesticides;
  2. Farmers Measurement Conversion Handbook; and
  3. Pesticides Measuring Scoop to assist farmers in using the correct dose rates using the metric system when applying pesticides.

The Training was most welcomed by the farmers whom expressed appreciation for the materials issued especially the pesticides measuring scoop and the conversion handbook. The participants also expressed gratitude for the trainings and indicated that they will endure better safety practises when working with pesticides.
