Counties Manukau DHB

The Counties Manukau District Health Board is both a provider and funder of public hospital and health services to the people of Manukau, Papakura and Franklin areass.

The area covered by the Counties Manakau DHB comprises a rich and diverse cultural and socio-economic make up. Manukau has the greatest Pacific Island population in the South Pacific. People from Asia make up 11% of the population, and Maori and Pakeha make up a sizeable proportion of the patients served by the Counties Manakau DHB.

The Hospital Chaplaincy Services

The Chaplaincy team is based at MiddlemoreHospital, Otahuhu. The chaplains respond from time to time to calls from the Auckland Spinal Unit Otara, Tamaki Oranga Mental Health Unitand from the Manukauand Botany SuperClinics.

The Chaplaincy team is currently made up of 1FTE Ecumenical Chaplain (Tikanga Pakeha), 1 FTE Chaplain (Catholic), 1 FTE Chaplain Pacific Island (Samoan), a .4 FTE Chaplain Asian ( Korean) and .4 FTE Chaplain Pacific Island (Tongan). There is also 1 FTE Chaplain ( Anglican Tikanga Maori) as part of the ecumenical team but he is not employed by or under the authority of the ICHC. There is also a team of voluntary chaplaincy assistants The full-time chaplaincy team members carry pagers and take turns covering the after hours emergency calls to all the units in the DHB.

New Spiritual Centre

A new Spiritual Centre (Chapel) which will serveas a place of worship, prayer and reflection for patients from all the religious faiths represented in the population within the DHB area is planned to open late 2013.

The Chaplaincy Committee

The South Auckland Chaplaincy committee is responsible for the support and management of the ecumenical chaplaincy team based at MiddlemoreHospital and workingin all the health units of the Counties Manukau DHB on behalf of the Interchurch Council for Hospital Chaplaincy Trust Board.

The committee is made up of representatives of the hospital management anddenominational churches in East and South Auckland.. The committee meets with the chaplains regularly, administers the ICHC personnel policies and procedures, fund raises and oversees theTeam of Chaplains and volunteer ChaplaincyAssistants.
