Mathematics Instructor

Responsibilities
Responsible to prepare and teach Mathematics courses and support the ongoing programs of TacomaCommunity College. These positions report to the Dean for Sciences.
Essential Functions

Position 1

  • Prepare and teach courses in mathematics ranging from developmental (pre-college level) through second year college courses, including courses for general business and science students in classroom and tutorial environments.
  • Provide leadership for departmental initiatives.

Position 2

  • Prepare and teach courses in mathematics ranging from developmental (pre-college level) through entry-level college courses in classroom and tutorial environments.
  • Provide leadership within the department in improving the effectiveness of our educational program for the developmental math student.

Both Positions

  • Develop and update curriculum as necessary.
  • Advise students, helping them to formulate sound educational and career plans.
  • Participate actively in departmental initiatives, serve on college committees and participate in college governance.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Position 1

  • Masters degree in Mathematics or closely related field.

Position 2

  • Masters degree in Mathematics OR Masters degree in Education, Adult Education or closely related field combined with significant coursework in mathematics at the upper division or graduate level.
  • Experience teaching developmental mathematics to adult learners.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Mathematics teaching experience (Minimum qualification for position 2).
  • Strong academic preparation in mathematics.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership in departmental projects and initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate educational technology into math instruction.
  • Experience teaching with current computer based math instruction software.

  • Competence to teach a variety of courses.
  • Competence to review and/or develop math curriculum.
  • Commitment to teach students of widely varying levels of proficiency and from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Willingness to use contemporary teaching techniques such as collaborative learning, student projects and emphasizing multiple representations of functions.
  • Ability to teach in an independent learning/tutorial environment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, colleagues and staff.
  • Commitment to helping students improve their writing and critical thinking skills.
  • A strong commitment to teaching in a community college setting, responding to the broad-ranging needs of a diverse student population.

  3. Developmental Math Statement that describes your experience working with developmental learners, how your teaching style addresses their educational needs and describing additional needs these students may have beyond those of college level students. (One page maximum.)
  4. Copies of transcripts for all colleges and universities attended (official transcripts will be required for the successful candidate).

Terms of Employment

This is a full-time tenure track faculty position contracted on an annual basis beginning Fall quarter 2005. A collective bargaining agreement exists, and membership in the TCC Federation of Teachers or payment of a service fee is required. Placement on the faculty salary schedule will be commensurate with educational background and experience. Evening & off campus assignments may be a part of the instructional load.Degrees must be from accredited colleges or universities recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and verified by official transcripts.
Selection Process

All complete applications received by the guaranteed consideration date will be reviewed by a screening committee. Selected candidates will be invited to appear for a personal interview at the college which will include a teaching demonstration. All documents submitted as a part of your application package become the property of the college and will not be returned.
