Tenure-Track/Tenured Faculty Start-up Package Policy / Date Revised:
September 2015
Date Effective:
March 2012

Responsible College Officer: Dean

Policy Contact: CDes Human Resources Director and CDes Finance Director

______

POLICY STATEMENT

The College of Design will provide funding for start-up packages for tenure-track and tenured positions that were funded via the College position reserve fund. The department/school is responsible to provide start-up packages in those instances where a position was funded via departmental funds.

______

REASON FOR POLICY

To promote recruitment of excellent faculty.

To ensure consistency in start-up support for tenure-track and tenured faculty positions.

To provide for special circumstances that may warrant a more generous start-up package.

______

PROCEDURES

Start-up packages are negotiated by the respective department/school head with the newly hired faculty member. Standard start-up expenses include:

·  Moving costs, if applicable, not to exceed one-month of the annual base salary.

·  Two months summer salary and fringe, generally to be used in the first two years.

·  Graduate research assistant equivalent to 2 semesters of salary and fringe at 25% time, generally to be used within the first two years.

·  Computer set-up (hardware and software) and office set-up; maximum of $5,000.

·  Professional development funding for the first year of $2,000.

Some hires may necessitate significant differences in start-up packages due to needs such as specialized laboratory equipment, computer software, or additional research support. The department/school may indicate they will fund the difference via department/school funds or request additional funds from the College when submitting the start-up package proposal. Such requests must clearly articulate the reason for the exception.

The start-up package proposal (see form) should be submitted to the HR Director and the Finance Director, who will then discuss the proposed package with the Dean for final approval. The request should indicate what funding will be provided by the department/school, the compact, any grants, and where support from the college will be needed. A response from the Dean will be made as quickly as possible. In instances of approved college support, the funds will be transferred to the department/school.

______
