Subject: 2017-2018 Employee Work Agreement

The Employee Work Agreement is designed to provide additional time on task and additional planning time to support our focus on accelerating student achievement. The rigors of the Common Core State Standards require that we use every available resource to ensure that we give our students as much time as possible to move ahead in their learning.

We ask that all staff members who are intending to work at LMMES during the 2017-2018 school year commit to providing the additional time needed to improve teaching and learning. The schedule for that time includes:

•A school day that is designed to provide more time on task for student learning

•The total teacher work day will be total of 7.5 hours per day. For the 2017-2018 school year, the work day will last from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and the student day will be from 8:05 a.m. to 3:25 p.m.

•Up to two weeks of summer training to provide professional development hours in Math in Focus-K- 8; Core Knowledge; Expeditionary Learning; school culture and discipline.

Teachers will be expected to attend school planning and curriculum development sessions up to two weeks every summer. For the 2017-2018 school year, the following summer sessions must be completed:

Session I: Monday, August 21, 2017 to Friday, August 25, 2017 from 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Session II: Monday, August 28, 2017 to Thursday, August 31, 2017from 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

  • In an effort to conduct team building exercises, collaboration among the staff and social – culture sensitivity awareness a staff retreat at Green Chimneys Retreat Center in Carmel NY will be hosted on Monday, August 28, 2017. The excursion will take place from 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. Transportation and meals will be provided.
  • Social Justice Showcase #1: Date TBD from 3:35pm to 7:35pm
  • Social Justice Showcase #2: Date TBD from 3:35pm to 7:35pm
  • Social Justice Showcase #3: Date TBD from 3:35pm to 7:35pm
  • Extended Thursday PD #4: ______from 3:35pm to 8pm (includes May faculty meeting)

Faculty Meetings:

All meetings of school facilities and departments shall be conducted after regular hours, so as not to impinge upon instructional time of students. Teachers will be expected to participate in no more than one faculty meeting per month to beginno later than 10 minutes after the final bell.

Preparation Time

Prep time to be no less than 30 consecutive minutes. For the 2017-2018 school year, every effort will be made to provide teachers with at least 3 prep periods per week of at least 40 consecutive minutes.

Lunch Time

For the 2017-2018 school year, lunch periods will be at least 30 consecutive minutes each day. On 1:00 p.m. dismissal days, lunch periods will be at least 30 minutes.

As per the NTU Contract, staff will be expected to attend Back to School Night and Report Card Night events which will be announced in September.

We are already seeing improvement in our assessment results that we attribute to additional professional development. It is critical that we continue our forward movement by remaining committed to providing the time and planning that will move Luis Munoz Marin to excellence. Please plan to sign and submit the attached EWA by March 17, 2017, so that we can determine the number of vacancies that we will have.

Election to Work Agreement

Luis Munoz Marin Elementary Renew School

In conjunction with the Memorandum of Agreement signed between the Newark Public Schools and Newark Teachers Union, the following is a description of expectations for educators who elect to work at Renew Schools. It should be noted, that the specific conditions described below may change.

Description of Renew Schools

Renew Schools are characterized by:

  • Mission-driven management where all staff are expected to exemplify the mission, vision, and core values of each Renew School
  • Additional social-emotional support and partnerships with Community Based Organizations and school staff
  • Additional time on task for students to accelerate reading, writing, and math skills
  • Increased focus on access to technology and instructional initiatives that use technology to help students access 21st century skills
  • An explicit effort to close the gap between schools and families
  • Data-driven instruction using interim assessments aligned to the common core
  • Increased focus on literacy instruction to ensure every student is on path to college-level reading and writing

Length of School Day/ School Year

  • The total work day will be total of 7.5 hours per day.
  • Teachers will be expected to attend school planning and curriculum development sessions for two weeks every summer.
  • Site-specific professional development will be developed during the five NPS professional development days throughout the year.
  • There will be up to four staff retreats throughout the school year.

Faculty Meetings

  • Teachers will be expected to participate in no more than one faculty meeting per month to begin no later than 10 minutes after the final bell.

Preparation Time

  • Prep time to be no less than 30 consecutive minutes.
  • Two periods of common planning (PLCs) and one period of teacher-team meeting will be allocated per week, minimum of 30 consecutive minutes.

Teacher Schedules

  • Participate in all common planning (PLC) meetings in a timely manner
  • Attend weekly teacher-team meeting to support the school in its mission and vision
  • Integrate technology in all aspects of teaching
  • Create unit plans aligned to the common core – and lesson plans aligned to the unit plans
  • Create a data-driven approach to individualizing instruction for students
  • Embrace an “open-door policy” and developing best practice pedagogy to facilitate professional growth and collaboration

  • Collaborate and meet with CBOs and partners to ensure students are supported in their social-emotional as well as academic growth
  • Utilize online system (DPnet and PowerSchool) to plan, for support and grade students.
  • Ability and availability to coordinate special programs

Additional Duties

  • All faculty members may be expected to serve as an advisor for a group of students and assist with an extra-curricular student activity.

Compensation

NTU salary guide plus an annual stipend of $3,000.00.

Other

The undersigned has elected to work under the terms and conditions set forth herein and upon request will be granted a transfer at the end of a school year. Upon transfer to a regular (traditional/conventional) school, the stipend above will no longer be paid and the teacher’s compensation shall be what is paid at the regular (traditional/conventional) school.

The undersigned agrees and acknowledges that the tenured teacher reduction in compensation portion of the statute, NJSA 18A:28-5, does not apply in the event of a transfer (voluntarily or involuntarily) out of the Renew School to a conventional school in the district. The undersigned acknowledges that the additional stipend associated with the Renew School is based on auxiliary duties of advisor and additional work time.

Teachers should expect year-to-year or even intra-year, flexibility in aspects of their duties and program not covered by the agreement, including but not limited to timing/scheduling of faculty meetings to respond to school conditions, and/or scheduling and manner of professional and staff development. However, any changes will be within the teacher day.

By signing this election to Work agreement I agree to abide by the terms and conditions set forth herein. I recognize that this school will operate outside of some terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Newark Public Schools and the Newark Teachers Union.

My signature indicates that I have read all of the terms and conditions set forth in the Election to Work Agreement and agree to work at a Renew School.
