A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
TO CONGRATULATE CANDI AND CHRISTY CARNES ON BEING NAMED 20042005 TEACHERS OF THE YEAR FOR SUMTER SCHOOL DISTRICT TWO AND TO EXPRESS SINCERE APPRECIATION TO THESE TWO OUTSTANDING TEACHERS FOR THEIR HARD WORK AND DEDICATION TO THE YOUNG PEOPLE OF SUMTER.
Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina recognizes Candi Carnes for her success in teaching first grade at Oakland Primary School and her daughter, Christy Carnes, for her success in teaching second grade at Shaw Heights Elementary School; and
Whereas, it is appropriate to pause and recognize the sacrifices of those who teach and to encourage these individuals who continue to inspire children year after year; and
Whereas, this mother and daughter team are dedicated to shaping the young minds in their schools and community and both give freely of their time, talents, and energy to their students; and
Whereas, having always dreamed of being a teacher, Candi Carnes began taking early childhood education classes in 1994 at the University of South Carolina Sumter after encouragement from her daughter, Christy, who had begun taking the classes a year earlier; and
Whereas, working together and supporting each other’s efforts, Candi and Christy Carnes completed their Bachelor’s Degrees in Early Childhood Education at Coastal Carolina University; and
Whereas, continuing their education, Candi earned a Master’s Degree in Computer Technology in Education from Lesley University in Pennsylvania, and Christy earned a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of South Carolina; and
Whereas, Candi and Christy share the same philosophy of “handson” teaching and will get down on the floor with their students to develop a stronger connection; and
Whereas, both Candi and Christy are creative and innovative in their teaching styles and often use computers and recent technology to teach their students; and
Whereas, although teaching is hard work and often tiring, both mother and daughter admit that there is nothing they would rather be doing; and
Whereas, Candi and Christy are two of sixteen Sumter School District Two Teachers of the Year who will be competing for the District Teacher of the Year to be announced in the fall of 2004, and these two teachers are highly worthy of the district title; and
Whereas, when not at school or volunteering with their students, Candi and Christy also greatly value the time they spend with their families and are equally as dedicated to their family members as they are to their students; and
Whereas, Sumter County is fortunate to have these two extraordinary and dedicated teachers teaching in the public school system. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate Candi and Christy Carnes on being named 20042005 Teachers of the Year for Sumter School District Two and express sincere appreciation to these two outstanding teachers for their hard work and dedication to the young people of Sumter.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Candi and Christy Carnes of Sumter County.
