About “DeX 2018”

Hong Kong Design Centre is now scouting for young designers to join our pilotdesign exchange projectin 2018- “DeX 2018”.The projectaims at upholding HKDC’s mission “to establish Hong Kong as a centre of Design Excellence in Asia” and introduce Hong Kong design young force to Asia Pacific region and ASEAN market.

With a process of selection byavetting panel, “DeX 2018” will bring2 groups of8-10 Hong Kong emerging young design talents to either joining:

(1) DeXBangkok at Bangkok Design Week (27 Jan – 4 Feb 2018);or

(2) DeXMelbourne at Melbourne Design Week (15-25 Mar 2018)

(1)DeXBangkok

Part 1: Showcase at “International Partnership Showcase” of Bangkok Design Week

8 -10 young designers from all kind of design disciplineswill be selected to participate in Bangkok Design Week’s International Partnership Showcase.

Part 2: Inspiration trips

Selected designers arecompulsoryto join the Bangkok Inspiration Trip (around 4-7 days between 26 Jan – 1 Feb 2018).Sponsorship on1) round-trip air ticket from Hong Kong to Bangkok, 2) hotel room for the entire trip and3) on ground transportation of all events arranged by HKDC.

The participated designers will have opportunity to visit anumber of design/ business related studios, centres, exhibitions, museums and participate in business networking events, design/business related symposium/seminars/workshops. The inspiration trips shall be a valuable experience for participants to further explore their opportunities overseas.

Part 3: Post-event publicity

Participants will be invited to speak at “DeX Salon” at PMQ’s HKDC studio and interview by HKDC’s newsletter,“dMatters” to share their experience and insights gained from participation.

(2)DeXMelbourne

Part 1: Pop-up store at National Gallery of Victoria’s Design Store

8 -10 young designers mainly from product, fashion and accessorieswill be selected to join a collaborative pop-up store with HKDC & NGV at Design Store of National Galley of Victoria International.

Part 2: Inspiration trips

Selected designers arecompulsoryto join the Melbourne Inspiration Trip(around 6-9 days between 14– 22 Mar 2018). Sponsorship on1) round-trip air ticket from Hong Kong to Melbourne, 2) hotel room for the entire trip and 3) on ground transportation of all events arranged by HKDC.

Part 3: Post-event publicity

Participants will be invited to speak at “DeX Salon” at PMQ’s HKDC studio and interview by HKDC’s newsletter, “dMatters” to share their experience and insights gained from participation.

Part 4: “DeX Ambassador”

Subject to funding and future planning of our flagshipprogramme,Business of Design Week (BODW), the selected designers will be served as “DeX Ambassador” to receive young designers from BODW 2018 -Melbourne. The selected designers may also have chance to participate in an exhibition with cross-disciplinary works created by emerging artists and designers from Hong Kong and Melbourne. The role of a DeX ambassador is to cultivate friendship and build future cooperation with the designers from the BODW partner city. Each DeX ambassador will be assigned at least one designer from Melbourne/ Australia, they are expected to introduce more local designers to the assigned oversea designers and provide assistance to them during the exchange period. The DeX ambassador is also expected to accompany the oversea designer(s) to experience the local culture & lifestyle.

Selection Criteria

All eligible applicants are required to undergo a selection procedure by the vetting panel. Selection criteria will be based on:

  • Innovation and creativity
  • Professional background of the applicant and relevant strength
  • Marketability of the designs/ products/ services provided
  • No. of awards relating to good design received
  • Relativity of the annual theme of Bangkok Design Week or Melbourne Design Week

Participation Obligations

  • Assist to setup the exhibits during the exhibition set-up (tentatively on 26 Jan 2018)
  • Participated in the Design Week and attend all events, visits and activities organized by HKDC during the trip
  • Stand by at the showcase area/ pop-up store to greet guests and visitors (around 2 days). However, full time manning at the pop-up store in Melbourne edition is not required
  • Participant shall participate all parts of each edition stated above

Important Remarks

  • Participants shall be responsible for the travel visa application to Bangkok/ Melbourne. Participants shall make sure a valid travel visa is obtained before the inspiration trip, and the passport you will use for the tripshould have at leastsix monthsof validityfrom the travelling date (i.e. Bangkok trip: passport shall valid at least to Aug 2018; Melbourne trip: passport shall valid at least to Oct 2018)
  • Participants of Bangkok Edition shall hand carry their exhibits on flight to Bangkok. Bulky or heavy exhibits may be granted with extra baggage fee however the grant is subject to HKDC final decision. Shipment of exhibits back to Hong Kong will be responsible by HKDC
  • Participants are required to depart from and return to HK according to HKDC’s schedule, no special travel arrangement (i.e. late arrival and stay behind) will be entertained. Non-compliance will be disqualified.

About “Bangkok Design Week”

Bangkok Design Week 2018 (BKKDW2018), a creative & design festival will take place from 27 January to 4 February 2018 across creative districts, such as Charoenkrung, Khlong San, 22 Karakadakhom Circle, Rama 1 and Sukhumvit within walking distance and connecting BTS & MRT routes.

Organized by Thailand Creative & Design Center (TCDC), under the Office of the Prime Minister, BKKDW2018 explores the theme of “the NEW-ist Vibes” by inviting the Thai creative & design community to share fresh and insightful visions of Bangkok, allowing visitors to peer into the future of the capital of Thailand in three subjects, including City & Living, Well Being & Gastronomy and Creative Business. Types of design projects are Experimental Design, Crossover and Co-Creation. Details:

About Melbourne Design Week & NGV (National Gallery of Victoria)

Melbourne Design Week is an annual design program linking creativity with business and community.Each year the program will explore the value of good design in a ten-day, city-wide celebration offering talks by leading designers, tours, workshops and industry events at NGV and partner venues throughout Melbourne. 2018 Melbourne Design Weeklooks at the themeDesign Effectsand delves into the wide-reaching nature of design in its broadest sense. About Application

  1. All applications will be vetted by the vetting panel of HKDC and the decision of HKDC shall be final.
  2. Applicants will be selected to join either DeXBangkok or DeXMelbourne. Exceptional case will be granted with strong reason and consensus by the vetting panel.
  3. In case any of shortlisted designers rejects the offer of the Bangkok and/or Melbourne trip, his/her position to the trip as well as participation in the Bangkok Design Week and/or Melbourne Design Week will be forfeited and replaced by the designers in the waiting list.

About Inspiration Trips

  1. Selected designers are required to join the inspiration trip and attend all the trip activities listed in the itinerary including cultural and business visits, attending seminar, business networking and etc. Selected designers need to comply with all instructions from HKDC during the trip. Absences without notice are not allowed.
  2. Selected designers shall be responsible for their own visa arrangements. In case of failure to depart due to invalidity of travel document, all the liability is with the selected designers.
  3. Participated designers should comply the law of the visited country, including but not limited to the customs, immigration or transport regulations. HKDC is not responsible to participated designers’ violation of law. Participated designers should comply the regulations of the organisations visited. HKDC is not responsible to participated designers’ violation of regulations and the circumstances and costs incurred.
  4. HKDC reserves the right in any circumstances to change the content of the Inspiration Trips (i.e. accommodation, visit locations, dates and itinerary) without prior notice.
  5. Participated designers shall settledirectly with the hotel regarding all additional charges incurred by them at the hotel when they check out.
  6. Participated designers shall be responsible for the costs and charges in connection with their request to change any transportation arrangement and/or hotel room reservation.
  7. Participated designers are required to purchase their own travel insurance. HKDC will not be responsible to handle in case of any members getting injury or accident or casualties according to the terms and conditions. No liability on HKDC and its staff in this scenario.
  8. HKDC will liaise with the Travel Industry Commission (TIC) and follow their instruction in case there is any epidemic or severe natural disasters in the destination before departure. HKDC reserves the right to alter or cancel any route, itinerary and/or accommodation without prior notice to the participated designers if it shall in its sole discretion think this fit or in case of force majeure. HKDC has no responsibility or liability for any expenses, reimbursement or time loss.
  9. HKDC reserves the right to change, shorten or extend the itinerary and compensation payments do not apply, where performance is prevented by risk of war or threat of war, riot, civil strife, industrial dispute, terrorist activity, natural or nuclear disaster, fire, adverse weather conditions, technical problems, with transport, closure or congestion of airport or ports, cancellations or changes of schedules by scheduled airlines and similar events beyond the HKDC control. Objection or withdrawal of tour under this circumstance will be not entertained.

About Showcase

  1. Selected designers are required to provide products/ design works (exhibits) to HKDC for Bangkok showcase andMelbourne pop-up store at their own cost.
  2. Only original design & creative works of the participants can be showcased and sold at pop-up store.
  3. HKDC will exercise a high degree of care in handling all exhibits, HKDC will assume no liability for any damage or loss of any kind.
  4. The selected warrants that the goods and the packaging do not in any way violate or infringe any third party’s rights including trademarks, copyrights, designs, names and patents whether registered or otherwise, and agrees to fully indemnify HKDC against all costs, expenses and damages arising from any third party’s claim of infringement of such third party’s rights.
  5. HKDC accepts no responsibility for selected designers’ works with regards to copyright laws.

General

  1. Selected designers have the obligation to be speaker of “DeX Salon” and interviewee of HKDC’s“dMatters”.
  2. Selected designers (Melbourne) have the obligation to be “DeX Ambassador” to receive young designers from Melbourne.
  3. Selected designers will also undertake to take part in any sharing/promotional programme that HKDC may organise in future, and participate in any monitoring and evaluation requested by HKDC throughout the duration of the project.
  4. HKDC shall own the sole rights on any photos, videos, records taken or any materials taken or produced during the project. Photos and videos taken at the event and materials submitted may be used for promotional and advertising purposes by HKDC.
  5. HKDC reserves the right to make any necessary alternations regarding exhibition/ pop-up store venue, itinerary, schedules and the content of project.
  6. HKDC does not make any warranty in respect of any part of the Dex 2018 project. Participated designers shall waive all his/ her rights and interest, if any, of any nature to pursue against HKDC.
  7. HKDC has the absolute right to amend these terms and conditions at any time without prior notice.
  8. HKDC has the absolute right to interpret these terms and conditions. In case of dispute, the decision of HKDC shall be final and binding on all parties concerned.
  9. These terms and conditions shall be governed by the laws of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Personal Data

  1. According to Paragraph 2.3.3 of the Code of Practice on Identity Card Number and Other Personal Identifiers ("the Code"), the HKDC may collect the ID card number of the applicant to verify the applicant's identity and to identify applications related to the applicant.
  2. Personal data contained in the application documents are used by HKDC to facilitate the processing and assessment of applications. Failure to provide such data may affect the assessment and result of the application.
  3. If there is any amendment to the personal data on the application documents, the applicant must inform HKDC in writing to ensure that the personal data held by the HKDC is correct at all times. To help promote arts development and transparency, the HKDC may publish information concerning successful applications in its annual report, website, newsletter and other publicity materials; the HKDC may also use such information for its own research or policy development purposes. The applicant must agree to allow the HKDC to publish and use such information.
  4. If the applicant does not wish to receive any publicity material from the HKDC or related organisations, please notify the HKADC in writing.
  5. HKDC will not release information that would harm the applicant’s personal orbusiness activities. HKDC reserves the right to subcontract processing of any personal data to a data processor consistent with the applicable provisions of the Personal Data Privacy Ordinance.
  6. According to The Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance Section 18 and 22, and point 6 in Appendix 1 of the Code, the applicant has the right to know if the HKDC holds personal data related to oneself and to the participated designers of the project, and may obtain a copy of the data from the HKDC and to amend any inaccurate information contained therein. Such requests in writing should be addressed to the Executive Director, Hong Kong Design Centre.
