Clubhouse Colleagues: Developing Strong Members and Staff
Who should attend: Clubhouse Directors, Staff, Member Colleagues and Board Members
This Learning Community will focus on helping members and staff understand their respective roles within their Clubhouse and give them the tools to do that job well. How can members use Clubhouse to get the most out of their recovery? How can staff best facilitate opportunities for members? How can we all contribute to a positive and purposeful working environment? Sessions will cover the rehabilitative elements of the Clubhouse model, roles and responsibilities of Clubhouse members and staff, member leadership, tools for engagement, Clubhouse relationships, designing accessible work, creating intentional spaces, and more! There will be something for everyone at this learning community and you are strongly encouraged to attend!

Continuing Education Credits:
The Michigan Association of Community Mental Health Boards (MACMHB), provider #1140, is approved as a provider for social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) through the Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. MACMHB maintains responsibility for the program. ASWB Approval Period: 11/10/13-11/10/16. Social workers should contact their regulatory board to determine course approval. Social workers will receive up to 4continuing education clock hours for participating in this training.

This introductory plenary session will provide an overview of the Clubhouse model of rehabilitation, including essential elements of practice and research-based theoretical support for those elements. The benefits of community and sense of mattering as interventions for social isolation and lack of self-efficacy will be explored. Personal testimonial from a Clubhouse member will illustrate the real life impacts of this model of rehabilitation. Participants will be able to: 1. Describe 3 core components of the Clubhouse model of rehabilitation and consider implications for practice; 2. Identify 3 antecedents to and 3 consequences of self-efficacy; 3. Differentiate between a pleasant environment and a therapeutic environment for people with SMI; and 4. Identify opportunities to facilitate reciprocal social relationships within the Clubhouse.

1. How to Get the Most from your Clubhouse Membership

This workshop will discuss ideas on engaging members and staff. Roles and responsibilities of staff and members will be discussed. Find out how members can get the most from the opportunities at their club? Learn to identify what types of goals members have at the clubhouse and learn strategies for enlisting and supporting members in reaching their goals. Participants will be able to: 1. Identify 3 roles of members and staff; 2. Set 3 goals of Members to achieve at Clubhouse; and 3. List 3 ways that staff can engage members at clubhouse and help to set goals.
2. How to Encourage Member Engagement in the Work Day

This workshop will focus on the role of staff in the Clubhouse. Differences and similarities between the roles of member and staff will be explored, with an emphasis on the staff’s responsibility to develop and support a culture of acceptance, mutual support and success. The central responsibility of member engagement will be discussed using the framework of the PEO model of occupational performance to identify and reduce barriers to engagement. Staff will leave with an enhanced understanding of their job objectives and a framework within which to organize their engagement efforts. Participants will be able to: 1. Compare and contrast the roles and responsibilities of members and staff in the Clubhouse; 2. Identify 3 specific ways staff occupy their role in relation to Clubhouse members; 3. Identify 3 realms in which members may experience barriers to engagement; 4. Practice using the PEO Model of occupational performance to assess accessibility of 2 tasks; and 5. List 4 ways to encourage member engagement at the Clubhouse.

3. Member Leadership: Ways to Enable Members to Take Leadership Roles

Member ownership and leadership are crucial to develop in order to sustain a genuine Clubhouse culture. This member-lead workshop will provide specific examples of member leadership opportunities in our Clubhouses. The central idea is that members are enabled, supported and encouraged to take on leadership roles in all aspects of the Clubhouse. We will also examine how these leadership opportunities offer beginning, middle and advanced leadership in each category. This allows members to participate in ways in which they are comfortable while at the same time allows for ongoing development and new opportunities. There will also be a video related to these issues along with a robust discussion. Participants will be able to:1.List 7 areas of focus in which member leadership opportunities exist; 2. Describe the 3 levels of leadership available in each of these areas; and 3.Identify 5 Clubhouses who are available for member leadership training and consultation.
4. Relationships within the Clubhouse: The Staff Role

How can staff help members feel accepted and valued? This workshop will focus on the important role staff play in the success and growth of members within the Clubhouse. As panelists explore the unique relationships between members and staff, they will include a video used to examine Clubhouse relationships and common scenarios. The panel will also share information around common challenges staff face, including boundaries and member dependency. Participants will be able to: 1. Understand the impact healthy and supportive relationships have on member engagement and growth; 2. Identify where boundaries exist in these unique relationships; and 3. Learn at least 3 responses to common challenges staff face related to relationships.

5. Creating a Strong Unit and Collaborative Environment with our Use of Space

This workshop will show how our use of space and resources impact engagement. Facilitators will show ways to organize space and demonstrate the importance of creating a space that encourages group tasks to increase relationship building.Participants will be able to: 1. Name 3 ways that changing space and resources increases engagement; 2.Identify 3 new tasks to promote members and staff working together; and 3. Demonstrate 3 ways that rearranging space improves relationships between staff and members.
6. Creating a Strong Unit and Collaborative Environment with the Way we Organize our Work (Tasks)

In an interactive setting, we will brainstorm together how we can engage multiple people in a variety of tasks. We will review the OT framework presented in the opening plenary and discuss how work can be broken down to provide opportunities for all colleagues. We will address the importance of staff having a plan and being prepared to engage members when seeing a member not engaged or coming to you seeking involvement. Participants will be able to: 1. Identify at least 3 jobs currently done at your Club that can be broken down into progressive steps; 2. Identify work that is currently happening but is not assigned to a unit and incorporate it into unit work; and 3. Identify work that is going undone and work to solve this using the OT framework and/or incorporating it into unit work.
