Wilderness First Aid Training...
for Scouts and Scouters!

April 26th and 27th at Camp Wisdom

The new American Red Cross Wilderness First Aid Basics program is an outdoor oriented first aid training program. This is a 16-hour first aid course for backcountry situations when EMS is not readily available.

The “Wilderness First Aid Basics” program is designed especially for Venturing Crews, Venture Patrols and older Scouts as well as Scouters supporting an advanced outdoor “high adventure” program. The course includes classroom presentations and skills practice as well as outdoor activities including realistic scenarios and other problem solving opportunities. This program will be held as an “overnighter” at Camp Wisdom – camping space is available at the McDonald campsite both Friday and Saturday evenings. The course fees are $50.00 per person, which includes books, course materials, plus all meals.

Those who successfully complete this class will receive the new "Wilderness First Aid Basics" card and, if current in CPR and 1st Aid, a new “When Help Is Delayed” card. This class has no skill prerequisites, however it is highly recommended to be current in American Red Cross First Aid and Adult CPR skills.

Attendance at this class is generally limited to Venture age Scouts fourteen and older, and adults who are currently registered in BSA. All youth participants must have Scoutmaster or Unit Leader's recommendation. This is a great opportunity for a father-son (or father-daughter or mother-son or mother-daughter) learning experience! Or, an entire crew or patrol could take the class together. This class requires a mature attitude and is physically challenging… and a lot of fun!

This special class is being taught by the Red Cross Instructors from the Great Plains District Troop 1000 First Aid Team – web site at . Troop 1000 hopes to develop the capability to deliver this and other American Red Cross courses on an ongoing basis here at Circle 10 Council. Please let us know if you’d be interested in becoming an instructor (instructor certification can be completed in a very full weekend, and is available to anyone 17 years old and older, so it is ideal for older Venturers as well as adult leaders).

Special thanks to the Volunteers and Staff of the Transylvania Chapter of the American Red Cross, Brevard, NC for developing this class and making it available, and to the Northern Branch Office Scout Training Team !

Wilderness First Aid Basics is fun to take and to teach.
