FORCED DEPORTATIONS

The Howard government is forcibly deporting asylum seekers to countries that are either unstable, unsafe and/or have histories and on-going records of human rights abuses.
Iranian and some Afghan asylum seekers in detention have been put on notice and refugees on Temporary Protection Holders are also under threat of deportation.
Article 33 of the UN Refugee Convention expressly states that no country shall return a refugee to a place where his/her life is threatened.
Yet in 2002, the Howard government deported 2 Colombian asylum seekers and on their return Alvaro Morales was killed and Didi Balanta ‘disappeared’.
No asylum seeker should be forcibly deported or coerced into returning to unsafe countries.
The ACTU and affiliates oppose the forced deportation of Iranian, Afghan and Iraqi asylum seekers or any refugee.

"I am frightened. If we are sent home we will be killed because our family has become so famous: people hate us now; we are too famous, we are no longer safe.”
Alamdar Bakhtiyari: 15 year old asylum seeker, three years in detention now facing deportation.

ATTENTION AIRLINE UNION MEMBERS

Last Thursday 25th July, just after midnight, Ali Mazar, much loved uncle to Alamdar, was removed from Baxter detention centre and deported to Pakistan. As yet we have no word as to his whereabouts or safety. Alamdar is terrified and heartbroken and now faces the same treatment.
Alamdar’s mother, Roqia Bakhtiyari is seven months pregnant and in hospital. Despite her pregnancy, Roqia, her husband Ali, their two sons and three daughters all face imminent forced deportation to the Pakistan city of Quetta.
