Guidelines for Giving Mid – Term Evaluations
(All Grad student instructors must do these…please follow instructions carefully)
- You need to obtain the appropriate number of forms from Maxine in 503 Kern and give them to your grader (your grader is administrating the evaluations).
- Do after first mid-term, after they get their exams and their grades back. Do not do on same day they get their exams back – do after a day or two so they can digest the news. Also, make sure you do evals on a day where you have very good attendance – Fridays are usually not a good day to do them – we want to get a representative sample.
- Do at beginning of class – not at end – they will ‘run for the exits’ if you try to do at end of class – do about 5 minutes into class – after you review what you will talk about that day or review what you did the period before – this way, you can accommodate those that are running a few minutes late.
- Make sure that the students know that you are doing these to make the class better (it’s a win/win situation) and thank them in advance for their cooperation.
- Have your grader hand out and collect the forms – YOU ARE TO “DISAPPEAR” AS IN LEAVE THE CLASSROOM IMMEDIATELY AFTER YOU MAKE THE STATEMENTIN THE BULLET ABOVE. The process usually takes 10 – 15 minutes, depending on the size of your class.
- Your grader will come get you (tell them where you will be, usually in very close proximity to the classroom), and then you re-enter classroom and begin your lecture.
- The grader will take evaluations directly to the instructor’s staff assistant who will place them in the mentor’s mailbox.
- The mentor will read evaluations and tally the results on the sample worksheet that is available on the teaching workshop home page ( I also attach on the email) and then share the results with the instructor (the mentor will also send results to me via email). The idea is for the mentor to meet with the instructor promptly after the evals so that we can use the information in a timely fashion.
- If you have any questions, please send me an email, thanks!
