Week 1A
-Intro to the course
-Your Writing and Reading Situation (purpose, audience, tone, organizational strategies)
-Critical Reading “Animals at Play” / Out of Class
-Write an initial reflection, include the areas which you need to strengthen to attain your objectives for the course. (N.B In their portfolio, students will l need to complete at least 1 assignment to strengthen weak areas identified in their reflection.)
- Choose one developmental strategy (indicate tone and purpose) write a paragraph
-write a thesis statement for your essay / Reading material/Notes

-Organizational Strategies in depth eg Comparison/contrast, illustration etc.
-Write a paragraph choosing yet another strategy (if possible utilize material from research), again state purpose, and intended tone / Outline for essay / -Brief Holt Handbook chpt 2
Week 2A
-critical reading –exposition
(previous handout)-stylistic details: tone, imagery, appeals which work along with one another to achieve purpose.
-work on and discuss thesis brought to class
-work on and discuss writing an introductory paragraph / -Write introductory paragraph
-write another thesis statement / -chpt 1 Brief Holt Handbook (thesis)
-chpt 2 Brief Holt Handbook (intro/con)

-Inductive argument-generalization, and how to test
-counterargs
-reading from text, focusing on inductive reasoning and counterargs. / -1 pargraph for inductive reasoning (based on research done for the essay)

-argument fallacies (Writing Centre websites)
-transitions / -bring fallacies noted in newspapers to next class.
