Short Film Project
Due February 2nd, 2017
100 Points
For this project each student will help to write, direct, film, act, edit and produce a one minute short film for class. Each student will produce the following documents to show for their work on the film:
1 – A treatment and a script (20 points): A treatment is a half-page, hand-written document that explains the general idea of the film and what the themes of the film will be. This needs to be written before the script. The script will be a 1-2 page full screenplay that will show the dialogue, action, scenery, and shots that need to happen in the film. The screenplay will follow the provided example and build a model from which the film can be shot.
2 – Storyboard (20 points): A visual of a scene within the film, think like a comic book. These drawing can be simplistic in nature but should give a basic understanding of how the shot will be made and the important dialogue and movements that will happen in the scene. There should be at least six images for this portion of the assignment.
3 –Analysis of a shot (20 points): For this portion of the assignment, students will provide a screenshot of a single moment in the film and a one page analysis of the shot and how it relates to the overall film, the plot, characterization, and decisions that were made in the shooting process.
4- A one page treatment for the sequel, spinoff, or prequel (20 points): Students will provide a one page essay describing a second part to this particular short film. It can be a spinoff (different characters, same universe), a prequel (what happened to the characters before they show up in your film), or a sequel (what happens to the characters next).
5 – The film (20 points): A final, edited, formatted cut of the film to be shown in class. Each member of the group will rate the other members on their participation in the process and if one student does not participate then their score may go down. Basically make this fun and help out your classmates.
Films will be shown on February 3rd, 2017 in a classroom premiere and Q & A session with the directors and actors.
All films must be in the following formats:
-Black and White or Color
-Silent (Sound effects and music are fine)
-More than one minute but no more than two minutes in length
-Include all group members on the film
-Have a title at the top of the film
