Homework 1

Geology 3265

Name ______

Homework results will be checked during the next class.

A. Calculations

1.  A new crack separates two layers of sandstone that dip toward your house at 34 degrees. Rainwater has gotten into the crack, so you are worried. The upper slab weighs mg = 300000 Newtons = 300000 kg-m/s2. Your experiments show that the static friction force Ff for the wet sandstone surface is 150000 Newtons. Will the upper slab slip and flatten your house? Show all work below:

Notice the angle b is the same as the dip.

a.Write down the expression for the sine of b

b. Solve it for the downhill component of weight F0

c. Plug in the values and calculate F0.

d. Compare Friction Ff to downhill force F0. Will it slide?

B. Admin stuff

2.  Send an e-mail to using an address you check daily. THE SUBJECT LINE MUST BE GEOL 3265. I will use this address for announcements and to answer questions.

3.  Get the text, any edition. You need it; I can’t go over everything.

C. Definitions. Define all terms as you encounter them. I’ll list them for this lecture, just this once:
