U.S. CONSTITUTION UNIT EXAM/PROJECT

(CHOOSE ONE OF THE TWO PROJECTS AS AN INDEPENDENT ASSIGNMENT – WORTH 50 POINTS)

THE GOVERNMENT TREE

DIRECTIONS: In this project you will be drawing a fruit tree that is a simile for our government structure. In other words, you will be comparing the separation of powers in our government to the different parts of a fruit tree. Each part of the tree should be identified by labeling the portion of the tree that is being compared to followed be a brief analysis (see example below). The following features must be included in you tree:

1. The legislative, executive and judicial branches

2. The responsibilities of each branch of government

3. The framers (founding fathers) of the Constitution

4. The ideas of John Locke and Baron Montesquieu (use notebook and pg. 127 of

text).

Here are some ideas for what your tree should have

1. Roots 2. Trunk 3. Branches 4. Leaves (and/or) 5. Fruit

Analysis: Your analysis should be one or two sentences per feature. Use the following template sentence in bold to make you comparison.
The roots of the tree are like the ideas of John Locke and Baron Montesquieu because their ideas of natural rights and the separation of powers in government were used by out founding fathers to create a government with three branches that protect our rights.

Also, on the back of your project create a Checks and Balances acrostic poem that includes examples of checks and balances of the 3 branches of government. Use the graphic on page 131 of your text and your notebook for examples of checks and balances.

Use your Notebook and your text book to create your tree
