BORONIA PARK PUBLIC SCHOOL

SUN SAFE POLICY

As part of our school sun protection plan we will ensure that –

·  Students are taught effectively about the need for sun protection at all times – not just during school hours

·  Staff understand the issues relating to effective strategies for sun protection

·  There are opportunities for collaborative action on sun protection between members of the school community

·  Sun protection is promoted as a health and safety issue

·  Staff will provide positive role modelling of sun safe measures i.e. wearing a hat on playground duty or when teaching sport

Strategies to provide sun protection

Students will be encouraged to protect their skin by –

·  reducing their exposure to the sun and playing in the shade where possible at morning tea and lunchtime

·  wearing broad-brimmed hats or caps with side and back flaps to protect their face, neck and ears when playing outside and at all school activities held outside during the day

·  wearing the appropriate school uniform which has the acceptable UV level of protection

·  participating in sun protection activities that help them understand the dangers of not protecting their skins from sun damage

·  using a 15+ broad spectrum water resistant sunscreen. This will be provided from home.

Teachers will –

·  incorporate activities related to sun protection into classroom curriculum

·  regularly reinforce the sun protection policy to students in a positive way e.g. in class and at assemblies

·  utilise sheltered and shaded areas at sporting carnivals and external events where appropriate

·  hold outdoor activities at school in shaded areas where possible

·  remind students of the No Hat No Play rule for recess and lunchtime. Students without their hat need to play in the shade.

·  monitor and review the implementation of the sun safe policy

Outcomes

As a result of the school’s planning for sun protection –

·  Students will understand why personal sun protection is so important i.e. to prevent developing skin cancer. Students will learn to take effective action.

·  Parents and staff will understand the risk of sun exposure and support students by assisting in the implementation of the strategies in this sun protection policy
