BACKGROUND, VALUES, AND PURPOSE

Creating Whole Communities (CWC) focuses on rigorous issue- and practice-based research. As part of CWC’s focus on strengthening neighborhood practice and policy, CWC offersa summer research grant competition that intentionally connects University researchers and community partners inapplied, community-based research processes that contribute to evidence-based policy and practice.

Research conducted through Creating Whole Communities will uphold the following values:

  • Community stakeholder input is considered through all phases of research development including the identification of research questions, data collection, data interpretation, and dissemination.
  • Community partners are sought in areas of research development and dissemination.
  • Faculty and students from multiple disciplines are engaged in research efforts to provide a more well-rounded approach to research inquiries.
  • Findings/lessons learned will be disseminated to the public through publications and presentations.

Creating Whole Communities seeks to support UMSL facultyresearch that makes a meaningful contribution to community building practice and policy. Research projects may focus on:

  • Community building and public policy issues in a particular neighborhood, and/or
  • Community building and public policy issues that could be applied more broadly to multiple neighborhoods.

Furthermore, special consideration will be given to project topics on creating whole communities in inner-ring suburban settings or immigration and community development.

REQUIRED DELIVERABLE

Faculty awarded summer research fellows will be required to produce a scholarly article and white paper or research brief based on their findings and lessons learned. Research dissemination may also include conference presentations, forums, and news articles.Travel funds may be requested as part of the fellow application for presentation of completed research results at conferences. Research fellows will also be expected to explore partnerships with MU Extension (CWC will support and facilitate research fellows connecting with MU Extension faculty and staff).

ELIGIBILITY GUIDELINES AND RESTRICTIONS

Eligibility and General Guidelines:

  • Eligible applicants are full-time tenure-track and tenured faculty, who will remain employed by the University for one full year following the end of the award period, and UMSL Doctoral students who have completed all coursework except for dissertation research.
  • Funds must be expended within one year of award date.
  • Deadlines for research briefs and other scholarly papers will be outlined in acceptance letter.
  • Faculty Fellow applicants may include support for postdoctoral associates.

Funding Guidelines:

  • The CWC Research Committee and Leadership Team will fund proposals up to $5,000. The Committee will consider the appropriateness of the budget and may recommend an award less than the requested amount.
  • Funds may be requested for research assistants, equipment, supplies, and summer salary support for faculty.
  • Funds will not be awarded for research leaves, sabbatical leaves, or for teaching buy-outs.

Budget Considerations:

  • Sufficient detail of budget items must be provided to allow the committee to evaluate the appropriateness of the allocation. For example, please specify why specific software is needed and justify this if similar software is available through the university.
  • Equipment and supply purchases must conform to university guidelines (e.g. technology purchases must be approved by UMSL IT department, gift cards must be purchased through ShowME, etc.). CWC staff will work with fellows to ensure purchases comply with these guidelines.

Reporting Requirements:

Deadlines for the research brief on the findingsand the scholarly white paper/journal article will be outlined and agreed to in the award letter. No products will have a due date longer than one year from the grant award. Other information requested in final grant reports will be information on grant proposals submitted and/or funded publications and presentations that have resulted from this award and information on student involvement that were supported by this award. APPLICATION GUIDELINES

All pages of the proposal, starting with the Proposal Summary, must be numbered consecutively. (Note: The review committee recognizes the educational value of preparing a proposal in the style used in a scholar’s specific discipline and at a level appropriate for evaluation by similar disciplinary colleagues.)

1. Completed Application Form (Including an itemized budget).

2. Proposal Summary/Abstract(Limited to 250 words, 12 pt. font)

Summarize the objectives and significance of the research for which Research Award funding is sought. This summary must be written in a manner that is understandableto colleagues in all disciplines.

3. Proposal narrative (Limited to two double-spaced pages not including references, 12 pt.font)

Please include the following:

  • Researchquestion
  • Research methodology
  • Implementation plan and timeline
  • Description of how theproposed project will support community building and how the research findings will be used
  • Relevance of the objectives to research goals of CWC(as noted in the CWC research overview)

4. Research Literature Cited (Limited to two double-spaced pages, 12 pt.font)

Provide bibliographic references for literature cited in the narrative.

5. Support Information

Provide names, contact information, and descriptions of previous work/relationship with community partners involved in the research proposal.

6. Accomplishments

Providecurriculum vitae of involved faculty.

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION:

The proposal will be evaluated on the following:

  • Adherence to application format.
  • Proposal quality, especially research questions and design.
  • Research significance to the disciplinary field, the applicant's career, and St. Louis communities.
  • Project feasibility.
  • Clarity and persuasiveness. The proposal should be understandable to non-disciplinary colleagues.
  • Results from prior university support.
  • Potential for research to result in scholarly manuscripts.
  • Foundation of inquiry is built upon partnerships with communitiesand community-based organizations in the St. Louis area. (Note: A letter of support from the community partner must be included in the proposal, describing their involvement in the planning and implementation of the project.)
  • Multidisciplinary nature – involving several academic departments or fields.
  • Highest priority will be given to projects that engage both University of Missouri Extension and University of Missouri – St. Louis faculty.
  • Active involvement of University of Missouri – St. Louis students through class projects, internship and practicum experiences or graduate assistantships.
  • Highest priority will be given to projects that have the potential of generating external support.

In addition to the summer fellowship award, research opportunities may arise throughout the academic year that fit the mission of CWC and may be considered for grant funding. Please contact Karl Guenther if you have an idea/opportunity that fits the CWC research criteria but falls outside of the summer fellowship timeline.
