K-W-O Chart (B-2)

DIRECTIONS:Determine a specific area of focus for the support provider’s observation of your classroom. Reflect on current practice and indicate:

1.What I know about my classroom practice

2.What I want to know about my classroom practice

3.What I would like my support provider to observe

What I know about my classroom practice
(e.g., I create an environment of respect; students understand the routines and procedures in my class, etc.)
My current classroom practice creates a safe, consistent, and engaging environment for all students to learn in. From the very beginning of the year I made sure to explain all procedures and answer any questions that the students had about our routine. Creating this type of structured environment is important for children. Children are creatures of routine and structure, and thrive in an environment where there is consistency. My goal is to keep a routine where students can be successful and learn in the most engaging and productive environment. Each day I type up an agenda for the day that has times, and what will occur at each time. In the morning, we review the agenda and answer any questions the students may have. Another way I keep students informed of the happenings in our classroom is to post them on the whiteboard. The weekly reminders are posted for all students to see each Monday morning, and they include an update of each day’s events. These events include the lunch schedule, the PE schedule, reading buddies, library, and other reoccurring and one-time events.
What I want to knowabout my classroom practice
(e.g., Effective strategies to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of my EL students, etc.)
As a new teacher, there are many things that I would like to improve upon. One area that I would like to get feedback on is teaching writing to struggling students. I would like to learn strategies that will help students in my class who are struggling in learning how to develop a strong paragraph with a topic sentence and a closing sentence. The third grade writing standards state specifically in standard 1.0 Writing Strategies, 1.1 Organization and Focus that students need to create a single paragraph, developing a topic sentence, which includes supporting facts and details. Creating a strong writing base is crucial for students to be successful in fourth grade and beyond.
What I would like my support provider to observe
(e.g., Evidence of how I check for understanding; how my lesson design meets the needs of my EL students, etc.)
During my observation I want to know how well students are actually engaged. My goal is to have the greatest number of students engaged at all times. When students are not engaged, am I making the necessary changes to my lesson in order to meet the needs of my students? Student engagement equals student success. If students are excited about what they are learning then they will be much more likely to retain the information they are being taught. I want to improve and increase student engagement.
