NORTH HIGH SCHOOL

CROSS COUNTRY

NORTH JV GIRLS ATTACK GOALS!

Freshman Nicole Prescott came up to Coach Marrero earlier this week and asked if she could wait to compete because she believed she wasn’t ready. Apparently she only meant she wasn’t ready to WIN the JV race as she took home top 10 honors in her first high school Cross Country race EVER! Nicole broke the tape in 20:23. Senior Megan Jensen powered through the 4000 meter race in 23:22, setting herself a standard to attack from now on. Junior Thi Huynh took 39th place in 28:20. The girls only had 3 runners, thus making them ineligible for team scoring.

JV BOYS PICK UP RIGHT WHERE THEY LEFT OFF LAST SEASON!

Alex Torno ran like a man on a mission. What was that mission? Proving to Coach Marrero that he was not a runner to look past! Torno popped off a crazy 15:32 over the 4000 meter race, grabbing his first career Top 5 finish, taking home a 4th place medal. Brandon Hundley also claimed a Top 10 medal, taking 9th place in 16:02. Thanh Phan managed to grab himself 15th place in 16:27. Newcomer Donnie Purcell cruised through his first ever Cross Country race as a Star, scoring for the JV Boys with his 22nd place 17:15. Freshman Boden Christensen was the fifth and final scorer for the Stars, taking 25th in 17:24. Missael Sandoval (26th, 17:29), Caleb Miller (27th, 17:30), Jacob Fuller (28th, 17:32) and Ryan Noble (29th, 17:52) crossed the line in a sea of Navy. Wisam Najdawi completed the 4000 meter course in 18:21, good for 33rd place, while also finding neat places where port-a-pots could (or should?) be placed. Falmata Gishe was 36th in 18:41. He was followed by Freshman Ethan Emerick in 20:18, good for 47th place! The Stars accounted for 66 points, good for 3rd place, only 4 points behind second place host, Bishop Heelan.

VARSITY GIRLS HEAT THINGS UP!!

Freshman Lillyana Yebra showed that she will be someone who will be reckoned with this season. Even after a fast start which saw her in second place a half mile into the race, Yebra managed to hold her own and grab 6th place in 17:26! She was followed by another Freshman, Mercy Oyadare, who managed to take hold of her first Top 15 finish, taking 11th in 17:43. Junior Newcomer Shauna Folchert was next for the Stars, blazing through the course in her new spikes in 17:48, good for 12th place, a third Star in the Top 15! Jasmin Ruelas nearly found herself in the Top 15 also! Ruelas popped off an 18:18 for 17th place. She was followed by Team Captain Paige Noble, who rounded out the scoring for the Stars, claiming 21st place in 18:43. The ladies popped off 67 points to claim the Runner-Up position, a 40 point improvement from a season ago!! Go Stars!!

TIE-BREAKER IN PRIDE LAND!!!

Who cares that the Boys race was only 2.9 miles. Who cares that it was 967 degrees outside in the shade and the Gatorade was boiling! THIS WAS OUR DAY! The boys had been pumped about this day for nearly three weeks; they were chomping at the bit, drooling every practice and day dreaming in classes! They were ready! The question was asked, “Coach, what’s it going to take to win this meet?” Coach Marrero responded like this. “Simple. All five scorers MUST be in the Top 15. Period!” Junior Andrew Lindquist missed all of last season with a broken bone in his foot. Then he rattled off over 350 miles this summer!! The Junior newcomer found himself finishing in 5th in his first Cross Country race EVER, covering the 2.9 mile course in 17:09! Lindquist was followed closely by Captain Connor Coyle, who led his troop by example as the pack started easy and worked themselves into position. Coyle took 8th place in 17:22, for his first Varsity Top 10 finish ever! The most experienced racer on the team was followed closely by the least experienced in Freshman Gavin Bush, who probably had the best final mile of the meet, grabbing 9th place in 17:29. The Sophomore Sensations (yep, they’re back!!) were the next three Stars to cross the line, led by Daniel Folchert’s 11th place 17:31. Kaleb Maynard, who nearly missed school due to the worst case of allergies in the history of mankind, managed to have the gutsiest performance of the night, taking 13th in 17:41. This brought all five scorers in the Top 13! But there was something wrong! The Stars found themselves in a 46-46 TIE with East! How is this broken you say??? The 6th Runner rule. In the case of a tie, the two teams will compare 6th runner place finishers, the first finisher wins the meet. BAM…meet, Ko Noble! Nobletook 17th place in 18:14, guaranteeing the Victory for the Stars! Jonathan Gray found himself in his first Varsity competition, grabbing 23rd place in 18:44!! A GIGANTIC personal best for Gray! (By the way, Jonathan Gray ALSO finished ahead of East’s 6th runner!) This was the first victory for the Stars since the 2010 West Sioux Invite!
