Observation notes
2.05 Class come in and sit down; teacher is standing by his desk; some disruption with several children as they come in. No evidence of teacher controlling the seating of the class. Starter on the board, picture of a valley and 3 questions with it. Objectives written on small white board next to front of room. Picture quite small, some kids at the back talking and messing about with a phone under the desk. Girl next to me does not answer any questions (Can’t? View? Lazy?)
2.15 Teacher takes feedback from groups. Kids putting up hands; someone shouts out, teacher ignores (kid does shut up). Group at the back, girl next to me do not participate in Q & A. Register is taken and the whole class is here. Teacher gives correct answers to questions (no one writes them down, not clear whether they should or not); explains processes and sets up tasks (now 30 minutes in, and girl next to me still has done nothing, very quiet though)
2.30 Kids are working on tasks, teacher is moving around the room; lots of hands are going up
2.35 Teacher pulls class together and explains task again. Pupils carry on with fewer hands up. Two boys at the back of the room are being silly; teacher goes and speaks to them (told to get on or one will be moved). LSA working with small group on the left-hand side, they seem to be getting on OK (teacher does not go to this group at all during this section of the lesson). Girl next to me has done one task (about 3 lines in her book)
2.50 Plenary, teacher plays ‘Blockbusters’ with key words on glaciation. Pupils very keen and enjoy this, lots of hands up, some shouting out. (Not sure how this links to lesson objectives.) Class leave the room as the bell rings, teacher at front desk
Reflection
What I will do in my own teaching and planning as a result of this observation
Think about controlled starts and finishes to lesson, perhaps I can stand at the door as they come in and go out. Write seating plan and enforce it
Develop strategies to ensure whole class participation in the lesson. ‘No hands up’ rule perhaps for next time
Plan my instruction-giving as part of the lesson plan

This should be photocopied for subsequent use
