The Riverdale Neighborhood House Career & College Youth Internship Program is a stipend-based paid internship. If you are a high school student between the ages of 14 and 18 looking to develop job skills, explore careers and college, and gain experiences that will boost your resume and/or college application then you are encouraged to apply. Selected interns participate in various activities to enhance their experience including career club, academic assistance, college information, health & mental health education, peer-to-peer education, trips, and year-end events.

NEW: The Youth Internship Program is proud to include college access. Besides job readiness training and career explorations, our interns will now receive individualized strategies and support for their post-secondary goals. This includes, but not limited to, academic assessment, college workshops & fairs, and college visits.

Youth Internship Program- Spring 2017Descriptions

A commitment of3 months (March- June) is expected and required for this program. Interns work four hours per week and attend monthly Friday meetings.

A. Garden Internship – Food Connections

Friends of Van Cortlandt Park(80 Van Cortlandt Park South)

For years, Friends of Van Cortlandt Park’s and KingsbridgeCommunity Center’s Garden has educated young people about gardening and its vital role in their community. This internship allows young people to assist in developing and maintaining a community garden. Interns will work in an outdoor gardenlearning about planting, composting and other environmental topics. Interns will promote and implement many aspects of the garden program to community members. This is a great internship for young people who like the outdoors, and interested in food production, horticulture and the environment. Work days/times are to be determined but interns work 4hrs/week with monthly meetings on Fridays.

B. Media and Broadcasting Internship

BronxNet

BronxNet, located on the LehmanCollege campus, is home to the Bronx’s only public access television station and offers diverse programming showcasing the Bronx. Interns will get a behind-the-scenes look on how a television station operates and of the various careers in this field. Teens will learn about studio production, editing, and camera operation as they create their own field-production packages that will be broadcasted at the Open 2.0 show; a show created by teens for teens. This internship is for a motivated, hands-on, and creative teen that wants to expand their knowledge about media and broadcasting. Interns work Mondays and Wednesdays4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. for a total of 4hrs/week plus monthly Friday meetings.

C.TeenCenterMakers

RiverdaleNeighborhoodHouseTeenCenter, a place for teens to call their own, to discover who they are- and who they want to become, is now redesigned with all new features. The RNH Teen Program is looking for high school students who can help us develop and structure our TeenCenter. As a Teen Center Maker, you will assist in planning recreational activities for our TeenCenter, host special monthly events and actively promote the center. You will development leadership and event planning skills, as well as, strengthen your verbal and written skills. Work days to be determined, but the work times are 5:00 .p.m. -7:00 p.m.

D. Education Internship

Riverdale Neighborhood House

The Learn, Educate and Develop (L.E.A.D) internship at Riverdale Neighborhood House provides youth the opportunity to work side by side with teaching professionals in an after-school setting. Working with young children in a classroom and library setting, teens will have the chance to develop skills required for promoting literacy and learn classroom management skills. As an intern, you will also gain valuable job readiness skills and college preparedness. Interns work Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. for a total of 4hrs/week plus every other Friday from 4:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

E. Health Internship

Hebrew Home

The health internship offers young people an opportunity to intern in a nursing care facility working with the elderly. Interns will work alongside health care professionals to learn about the career and develop the skills to care for the residents. Interns will also participate in various social and recreational activities. As an intern, you will also gain valuable job readiness skills and college preparedness. Work days are to be determined, but interns will work a total of 4hrs/week plus every other Friday from 4:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Interns must be 16 years old or older and will need a PPDandMMR vaccine to intern at this site. ***Applicants are strongly advised to submit their application early.
