IS GRACE ENOUGH?
Over the next few weeks I will be taking my thoughts of these articles from the book “The Simple Truth” by Aaron Erhardt, a book that I would highly recommend.
As stated last week I asked the question “Can a child of God fall from grace?” Last week I wanted us to notice how Paul made it very clear that Christians who had fallen into sin and if they did not change they would not be with Christ when they leave this world. The Hebrew writer goes into more detail dealing with the subject of falling from grace. The Hebrew brethren were called “holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling” (Hebrews 3:1). There is no doubt that the writer was in fellowship with each of these Christians. Yet we see that there were many terrible things that they could be involved in.
Consider the list taken from the book “The Simple Truth.”
Depart from God………………….Hebrews 3:12 Be Hardened through deceit of sin…………….Hebrews 3:13 Come short of the promise…………Hebrews 4:1 Fall after example of unbelief…………Hebrews 4:11 Count the blood unholy……..Hebrews 10:29 Cast away confidence…….Hebrews 10:35 Fail of the grace of God………………..Hebrews 12:15 Refuse him from heaven………. Hebrews 12:25 Be carried by strange doctrines……..Hebrews 13:9
Surely, no one believes that a child of God can depart from God, be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin, come short of the promise, fall after the example of unbelief, count the blood unholy, cast away his confidence, fail of the grace of God, refuse Him from heaven, and be carried about by strange doctrines and still be saved. Yet the Hebrews writer acknowledged that a Christian could do all of those things. This of course is not to say that a child of God has no assurance or confidence. Jesus promised that the believer “shall not come into judgment” (John 5:24). However, we must understand that a believer can become an unbeliever. A person can develop “an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God” (Heb.3:12). Each of us needs to understand that as long as we walk after the Spirit one can have an absolute assurance in his/her salvation (Romans 8:1). Ernie
