Boys & Girls / A beginner is a competitor who has not taken Irish dancing lessons from a registered teacher prior to
September 1st of previous year. Dancer must move into Advanced Beginner the following year.

The above syllabus represent the MINIMUM requirements for a

MID-ATLANTIC REGIONAL SYLLABUS

If the Mid-Atlantic region and the NAFC have divergent rules, the Mid-Atlantic rules prevail.

Please note the following:

A Special Child Competition may be added to a syllabus, but is not required.

A Tier na Nog Competition may be added to a syllabus, but is not required.

A First Feis Competition may be added to a syllabus, but is not required.

Treble Reel Competitions may be added to a syllabus, but are not required.

Traditional Set piece Competitions may be added to a syllabus, but are not required.

Set Piece of Choice Competitions may be added to a syllabus, but are not required.

Ceili and Figure Competitions may be added to a syllabus, but are not required.

Adult Competitions may be added to a syllabus, but are not required. All adult competitions are danced at Traditional Speed as listed in the Advanced Beginner Category.

Painting, Art, Drawing, Cooking, Irish Language, and Music Competitions may be added to a syllabus, but is not required.

Beginner Category:

An Under 5 age group may be added to the syllabus, but is not required.

Hop Jig Competitions ma be added to the syllabus in this category, but are not required.

Separate Boys and Girls Competitions may be added to the syllabus, but are not required.

Boys are permitted to dance reel, slip jig, light jig, and/or hop jig in this category.

Advanced Beginner Category:

Hop Jig Competitions may be added to the syllabus in this category, but are not required.

Separate Boys and Girls Competitions may be added to the syllabus, but are not required.

Boys are permitted to dance reel, slip jig, light jig, hop jig, hard jig and/or hornpipe in this category.

Novice Category:

Light Jig Competitions can be added in every age group, but are not required.

Hop Jig Competitions may be added to the syllabus in this category, but are not required.

An Under 14 age group, and a 14 & Over group may be added, but are not required.

Separate Boys and Girls Competitions may be added to the syllabus, but are not required.

Boys are permitted to dance reel, slip jig, light jig, hop jig, hard jig and/or hornpipe in this category.

Prizewinner Category:

Separate Boys and Girls Competitions may be added to the syllabus, but are not required.

Light Jig Competitions may be added to to the syllabus, but are not required.

Preliminary Championship Category:

Under 9, Under 11, Under 13, Under 15 and Under 17 Age Groups may be added to the syllabus, but are not required and can not replace the even year age groups required.

Age groups must be even years if offering double age groups for this category of competition.

Single year age groups may be offered but are not required.

Open Championship Category:

A third round (jig/hornpipe) can be added to the required dances for each age group, but is not required.

When a third round is not required for the Open Championship competitions, separate Open Jig and Hornpipe Competitions may be added to the syllabus in even two year categories or single year categories, but are not required.

An Under 8 age category can be added to the syllabus, but is not required.

Age groups must be even years if offering double age groups for this category of competition.

Single year age groups may be offered but are not required.

Under 9, Under 11, Under 13, Under 15 and Under 17 Age Groups may be added to the syllabus, but are not required and can not replace the even year age groups required.

Please Note

Beginner and Advanced Beginners must wear either a skirt and blouse or a school dress. NO solo costume allowed.

The Open Championships Under 9 Age groups must dance a Traditional Set Piece

After SEPTEMBER 1st of a year, Feiseana that offer double year age groups in Open Championships must switch from the even year age groups to the odd year age groups.

Championship Stage size for dancing 3 at a time is 28’ wide by 24’ long.

Preliminary dancers who win 3 first places in a calendar year, must move to Open Championship the following calendar year. When a third 1ST place win is achieved over several calendar years, the dancer must move to Open Championship the following weekend.
