Principal Vacancy: St Mary-St Joseph PreK-8 School, Willimantic, Connecticut

St Mary – St Joseph School is a consolidated inter-parochial Roman Catholic School, formed from two neighboring parishes and one of twelve PreK-8 elementary schools in the Diocese of Norwich, Connecticut. St Joseph parish was formed in 1859 and the school was opened in 1878. Later, in 1903, St Mary parish was established and St Mary School opened that same year. Under the pressure of enrollment decline and financial challenges the schools consolidated into one school building in 1968. Currently, there are 169 students enrolled.

The successful candidate will be a practicing Catholic with an understanding of and a commitment to the mission of Catholic education. In addition to a record of successful teaching, a master’s degree and Connecticut State Certification, bi-lingual (English/Spanish) fluency is preferred, as is demonstrated knowledge of curriculum and the qualities of potential leadership at the elementary level. The principal will possess the ability to work effectively with teachers, parents and pastors, along with an understanding of the complexities of interactions which need to take place between the school and the Diocesan School Office. The candidate should possess superior written and oral communication skills.

Minimum Attributes:

Ø  Practicing, active Catholic who shows an understanding of and commitment to the mission of Catholic education;

Ø  A teaching certificate in the State of Connecticut or in another state which can be recognized by the State of Connecticut;

Ø  An advanced degree, preferably in the field of curriculum and instruction or educational administration;

Ø  Demonstrated leadership skills;

Ø  Effective interpersonal skills;

Ø  Superior written and oral skills.

Preferred Attributes

Ø  Experience in Catholic elementary education;

Ø  Three to five years’ experience as a school administrator or comparable experience in other church related ministries;

Ø  Fluency in English and Spanish;

Ø  Demonstrated record of leadership ability;

Ø  Understanding of and experience with Catholic education;

Ø  Demonstrated experience in curriculum development and teacher evaluation;

Ø  Strategic Planning.
