Argument Essay Practice

Directions: The following is an AP style prompt meant to help you through the steps of reading, annotating, and answering the prompt. Read the prompt, and follow the steps below. This will be turned in today, and is very similar to a test you will have this FRIDAY.

PROMPT

American novelist and journalist Chuck Palahnuik (1962-present), in his novel, Lullaby once wrote:

“Experts in ancient Greek culture say that people back then didn't see their thoughts as belonging to them. When ancient Greeks had a thought, it occurred to them as a god or goddess giving an order. Apollo was telling them to be brave. Athena was telling them to fall in love.

Now people hear a commercial for sour cream potato chips and rush out to buy, but now they call this free will.

At least the ancient Greeks were being honest”

Consider this quotation about free will from the Palahnuik. Then write an essay that defends, challenges, or qualifies Palahnuik’s assertion about the role that free will plays in a contemporary society. Support your argument with appropriate evidence from your reading, observation, or experience.
