Essential Questions:

What was life like for minorities living in the thirteen colonies?

What values and beliefs were important to American colonists?

Introduction:

Native Americans, women, children and Africans had a very different perspective on life in the colonies than white male colonists. Although these groups had different life experiences they helped shape American customs, culture and values.

Task:

Your group will gather information about minorities living in the American colonies. You will use that information to create a Prezi presentation that will illustrate how minorities impacted colonial society.

Process

Step 1: Create Groups and Conduct Research

  1. Form groups of 3 or 4 students to create a Prezi presentation on a minority group (Native Americans, Africans, women or children) or an individual from one of those groups that contributed to colonial society.
  1. Choose ONE person or group from the list below:

  2. Native Americans
  3. Africans
  4. Role of children in colonial America
  5. Pocahontas

  14. Algonquians
  15. Queen Elizabeth 1
  16. Salem Witch Trial (Puritan Women)
  1. Upon deciding what minority group or individual your group is going to focus on, divide the work among the group members. The group will need to fill out the student assignment form and identify what each student will be responsible for. Your final presentation will be divided into four parts:
  • Role of minority group or individual in colonial society
  • Daily life in the colonies
  • Cultural identity
  • Contributions to colonial society
  1. You and your group members will use the following resources to conduct research on your minority group or individual. You may use other sources but you must cite all sources on your final presentation.
  1. Your research must include information on the minority groups’ or individuals’ contributions to daily life in colonial America and how they affected society. You will need to research the following information:
  • Explain the role of the minority group or individual within colonial society.
  • How was daily life in the colonies for the minority group or individual?
  • What are some daily challenges the minority group or individual faced?
  • Cultural Identity of the minority group or individual:

  • What lasting affects did the minority group or individual leave on America?

Step 2: Creating and Sharing Your Prezi Presentation

  1. You will be putting together a Prezi presentation. Click on the link to watch the tutorial on how to create one. How to create a Prezi:
  2. You will need to have a working e-mail account in order to utilize Prezi. Students will go to and create an account.

“If you don’t have an account you must follow the “GET STARTED” link that will help you set up your account.” *You will need an email account in order to create a presentation using this website.

b. All participants will be creating a Prezi account, but one would take the lead and share it with the other.

i. Once you open up a Prezi presentation, the share button is on the top right between present and setting icons. –Image below

ii. Once you click on it, hit Share Prezi… and another screen will open up in order for you to input your partners e-mail address.- Image below

iii. The other participant should not be logged into Prezi at the time when you are trying to share the Prezi presentation.

iv. Once you type in their e-mail address, click ADD. An e-mail will be sent to their inbox which they will log in to their e-mail account and retrieve. – Image below

v. They do not have to repeat this every time they want to both log into the same Prezi presentation. The recipient will always go to their email and click on the same link each time. The sender would always log in the regular way.

vi. Once the recipient logs into their email and clicks on the link, it will take them back to the Prezi log in screen. They would then log into Prezi with their account and in a few seconds they should see two members on the screen with names of each participant.

  1. Your Prezi must have the following information:
  2. Presentation must be divided into Four parts:
  • Role of minority group or individual in colonial society
  • Daily life in the colonies
  • Cultural identity
  • Contributions to colonial society
  • You must include at least three images for every section.
  • All questions from STEP 1 are to be answered by your presentation.

Step 3: Presentation and Evaluation

  1. Upon putting together the Prezi presentation each group member must be knowledgeable on their assigned area. Each group must practice their presentation and be ready to present to the information to the class. All group members must participate in the presentation.
  1. Once your presentation is complete each member must complete a self-assessment. See Prezi rubric for project expectations.
