INSETA INTERNSHIPS INFORMATION

1. Policy Statement

INSETA offers grants for following:

Work-based Experience (WBE) grants:

  • A programme for learners who require work experience in order to complete a diploma or degree (e.g. “technikon” or technical college type courses) that require the person to have a certain amount of work experience in order to achieve the qualification.

Internships:

  • A programme for learners who require work experience in order to gain professional registration.
  • A programme for an unemployed graduate who needs work experience.

According to the INSETA Policy Statement, INSETA will support Internships / Work-based Experience grants to enable learners to achieve the maximum of one year’s experience with a view to:

  • Afford the learner the opportunity of permanent employment.
  • Afford the learner to gain work experience.
  • Afford the learner the opportunity to establish a new venture on completion.

To offer funding, INSETA requires all learners in Internships / WBE opportunities, to have undergone a learning programme in one of the following:

  • Financial Management/Accounting/Bookkeeping
  • Legislative Compliance/Mercantile Law/ Other legal subjects
  • Selling and /or Customer Relation
  • Marketing Skills
  • Information Technology (Including data capturing)
  • Management (HR/IR; General etc)
  • Business administration (General or specific)

2. Duration

A WBE will only be considered for a minimum of 1 month to a maximum of 12 months.

An Internship grant can be considered for a minimum of 6 months to a maximum of 12 months.

3. Eligibility Criteria for Internship Programme:

3.1 Learner/Intern

INSETA will only accept participation from graduates who comply with the following:

  1. Must be a FET/HET Graduate, in one of the fields of study named in Section 2 above.
  2. Must be an unemployed resident of South Africa.
  3. The diploma/degree should cover at least the following, as per section 2 above, to comply with the National Skills Development Strategy (NSDS) requirement of alignment with the Sectoral Scarce and Critical skills, as per the SSP:
  4. Financial Management Skills
  5. Legislative or Compliance Skills
  6. Customer Relations Skills
  7. Marketing and Sales Skills
  8. Information Technology
  9. General Management Skills
  10. Business Administration Skills
  11. 85% of participants must be black, 54% must be women and 4% must be disabled.
  12. Have written endorsement of completion of the theoretical component of their qualification from their academic institution.
  13. Demonstrate exceptional potential and academic performance. Comply with selection criteria which include numeracy and literacy skills at least at Level 3 of the NQF; ability and potential to function in the Insurance Sector; academic merit; and the likelihood that the candidate will successfully complete their programme.
  14. Present a portfolio of work, as required by the Internships and ETQA Division.

3.2Employer

Be an employer who meets the following criteria:

  • Be an INSETA levy payer
  • Levies need to be up to date.
  • Has the financial capability to fund the Internship for the first 3 months.
  • Be registered with the INSETA and be willing to submit to INSETA, proof of levy payment exemption from SARS (if the company is exempt from paying Levy)

3.3 Learning Provider (Where applicable)

Be a Learning Provider who meets the following criteria:

  • Registered with the Department of Education, or exempt due to reasons acceptable to DoE.
  • Accredited by INSETA/or other ETQA.
  • Be able to monitor and evaluate learning in the work-place.
  • Have a Learner Management System in place.

4. Application Process Flow

  1. Where applicable, the Lead Employer obtains an accredited Training Provider, which may be accredited with INSETA or any other SETA ETQA. The Training Provider does not have to be accredited by INSETA.
  2. The Lead Employer submits Internships Grant Application to INSETA on the required forms. In order to increase the number of applications, INSETA decided not to have a time limit for the applications.
  3. INSETA Learnerships Division reviews the Internships Grant Application and makes recommendations for the provisional allocation of funds.
  4. INSETA communicates provisional allocation of funds and the Internship reference number (IWGA-number), to the applicant.
  5. The applicant submits to INSETA the following documents:
  • Letter to proof Employer’s financial stability
  • Employer’s proof of bank details (Cancelled cheque or Bank Statement)
  • Learner Achievement Plan
  • Internship Agreement/Contract of Employment, duly signed by learner and Employer.
  • Certified copy of the Learner’s ID
  • Certified copies of Learner’s Certificates
  1. Midway into the Internship, the Employer submits Progress Reports, duly signed by the Employer and the learner, to the INSETA Learnerships Division. Once the reports are evaluated, the Learnerships Division commences with the payment process.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Internship Grants will only be paid out on progress milestones and on submission of reports and in accordance with acceptance of the achievement plan milestones.
