Center for Emergency Preparedness

Post-Doc in Emergency Preparedness

Description of the Position:

The Center for Emergency Preparedness at the University of Texas School of Public Health invites applications for a Post-Doc position in Emergency Preparedness/Management which we anticipate to start around August 15, 2010. This is a 12-18 month appointment. This position is based in Houston, Texas.

Roles and Responsibilities:

The primary responsibility of this position is two-fold: one is to develop theoretical frameworks and literature for research grant submissions in diverse disciplines of emergency management (will likely entail bioterrorism, pandemic flu preparedness, and emergency cardiac care); the second is to collect and analyze specific data sets that are being created using statistical and spatial analysis tools to support information reporting, manuscript preparation, and new grant submissions. This is primarily a research and project-oriented position and does not involve teaching. We seek a flexible candidate that has some record of success in publications as a result of their PhD program.

Qualifications:

Candidates must be at least ABD with evidence of progress toward completing a doctorate in a field related to emergency management (such as public administration, public health, economics, or engineering). We prefer candidates with a quantitative background, and those that are comfortable with large datasets and statistical expertise. Communication skills are highly important due to the substantial grant and publication writing associated with this position. Successful candidates will be strong team players, will be flexible and willing to work as part of multidisciplinary teams, and should also be deadline oriented.

The University of Texas School of Public Health:

The Center for Emergency Preparedness at the UT School of Public Health center provides research and training focused on emergencies, including emergency medicine and disaster management. Our Center is comprised of scientists with backgrounds from management and policy sciences, information sciences, medicine, epidemiology, and environmental science. Our teams will work on projects funded through multiple sources, such as the Centers for Disease Control, Department of Defense, Department of Health, as well as private foundations. We seek a candidate with similar priorities. Through our programs we seek to improve capacity to respond to emergency events. We seek to provide ground-breaking research and service to improve readiness capabilities so that communities and governments can prevent, eliminate, and manage all health and safety threats, such as emerging infectious disease, natural disasters, and bioterrorism. The Center is based at the UT School of Public Health, which is one of the largest and most successful schools in the nation. One of the unique aspects of our program is that it is based in Houston, but has five regional campuses that provide education to the entire state.
