Abstract: State and federal laws concerning confidentiality can be complex at times. This workshop will review state and federal laws concerning keeping and storing records, patient access to records, and how to respond to subpoenas and court orders. In addition, this workshop will review risk management strategies (informed consent, documentation, and consultation) that are guided by patient welfare and adherence to overarching moral principles, not motivated by fear or clinically contraindicated defensive practices. Participants will review risk management strategies regarding patients who present a risk to harm themselves or others, how to deal with organizational conflicts, and how to deal with multiple/dual relationships. There will be opportunities for participant interaction.
