Course Description

This Internship Course (the “KINternship”) is designed to be a culminating experience for students who will graduate with a Major in Kinesiology. Our hope for you during this internship is that you will gain a practical experience in the Kinesiology domain, acquire skills and knowledge that could help with a potential career, and apply knowledge that you have learned throughout your undergraduate degree in a practical setting. We are pleased and excited to have each Kinesiology Major represent the Kinesiology Department, the College of Education, and MSU at your respective internship sites. In order to get the most out of your internship experience, we suggest you start considering internship possibilities and looking out for new potential experiences as soon as you have decided Kinesiology will be your major.

You are required to earn a minimum of 3 internship credits for successful completion of your undergraduate program in Kinesiology. You must register for a minimum of 3 credits per semester, and can register for as many as 6 credits. The number of credits must correspond to the appropriate amount of hours that you will be working at the internship site (60 hours of work for every credit).

Internship Site

There is a comprehensive list of potential internship sites with whom we have Affiliation Agreements located on the KIN 492/493 website. Other internship sites can be found at MySpartanCareer at http://careernetwork.msu.edu.

Is your internship out of state?

If you intend to complete your internship in a state other than Michigan, please contact Keri Morrison via email right away. Certain states require a letter of intent that MUST be submitted by the Department of Kinesiology and approved by both the internship coordinator and the Provost’s office 60 days in advance of the internship.

Application Process

It is the student's responsibility to secure an internship site, obtain approval for the site from the internship coordinator (Keri Morrison) via email, and to fill out the appropriate paperwork in order for us to register you for KIN 492/493.

Part 3: Course Outline

Refer to the course calendar on D2L and this syllabus for specific due dates and times. As we do not get to officially meet everyone in person, it is essential that you regularly check your email and D2L for information updates as this is our main means of communicating with you. Assignment details are explained in detail on D2L under the “assignments” section. If you have any questions, please contact one of the instructors.

ASSIGNMENTS

Guidelines and grading rubrics for the following assignments are located on D2L.

D2L will open the first day of class.

1.  Welcome Quiz on D2L

Due Sunday, January 14th 2018 by Midnight.

Please complete the Welcome Quiz within the first week of the class. You will need on hand the following: 1) a copy of the KIN 492/493 Welcome PowerPoint Presentation; 2) a copy of the KIN 492/493 Course Checklist; and 3) a copy of this syllabus.

2.  Weekly Hours Spreadsheet and Journal Assignment (25% of Final Grade)

Due Mondays by Midnight (including holidays).

Please read over the instructions and the example provided on D2L. In addition, please be sure to use the template provided on D2L. Upload your spreadsheet into the Dropbox on D2L in .xls format.

Once your weekly reports have been submitted to a Dropbox on D2L, you may not go back and make changes! If you do go back and make changes to previously submitted hours (unless instructed to do so by the instructors or TA), this is considered cheating and you may receive a 0.0 in KIN 492/493. You need to update the hours and journals each week in the appropriate tab and post the updated file each Monday by Midnight.

Please note that you are still required to turn in your Weekly Hours Spreadsheet and Journal Assignments on Holidays. If you have no hours to report, you do not need to submit a weekly assignment.

Once you have completed your required internship hours for this course, even if you are continuing at your internship site, you no longer need to submit weekly assignments.

Your Last Weekly Hours Spreadsheet and Journal are due-

Due Monday, April 30th 2108 by Midnight.

This means all of your hours must be completed prior to this date!

Please Note the following circumstances may result in a 0.0 in this course:

You may not log internship hours unless you are enrolled in KIN 492/493. Therefore, the first day of the semester is the first day you may begin logging internship hours.

If you wait until the last week of the semester to hand in your Weekly Hours Spreadsheets & Journals all at once or you do not hand them in EVERY week, you may receive a 0.0 in KIN 492/493.

3.  Proposal Assignment (15% of Final Grade)

Due Monday, January 29th 2018 by 5:00pm. Late Proposal Assignments: -2 points off per 24-hour period (even if 5 minutes late).

If you are starting your internship at a date later then the first day of class, you may email Mary-Anne Reid () within the first two weeks of class and request an extension. If Mary-Anne does not provide you with a new date, your proposal assignment will be due as per the syllabus due date.

Please follow the Proposal Assignment Instructions and be sure to look at the example of an excellent Proposal Assignment we have provided on D2L. Don’t forget to create your Personal Objectives Scale as this is a mechanism through which you will get feedback from your supervisor on your specific objectives at the midpoint and end of your internship hours. Upload your proposal into the Dropbox on D2L.

Please note: If we do not have a Proposal for you uploaded to D2L by the 4th week of your internship, your internship hours are no longer valid and therefore, you may receive a 0.0 in KIN 492/493.

4.  Site Supervisor Midterm Performance Evaluation (10% of Final Grade)

Due at the midpoint of your internship hours (e.g., enrolled in 3 credits and have 180 hours to complete, the midpoint of your hours would be 90 hours). This will vary for every student, thus it is YOUR responsibility to get your site supervisor to fill in the Midterm and Final Performance Evaluations at the correct time. The Midterm Performance Evaluation is a requirement of this class. If we do not have a Midterm Performance Evaluation from your site supervisor by the end of the semester, you may receive a 0.0 in KIN 492/493

All Midterm Performance Evaluations must be completed by your site supervisor and not you the student.

NOTE: Your site supervisor must click on the link on the KIN 492/493 website and fill out the electronic form. We will not accept Midterm Performance Evaluations via mail, fax, or email. The student, site supervisor, and instructors will all be emailed a copy of your Midterm Performance Evaluation after your site supervisor fills it out electronically.

Please email this link to your Site Supervisor when it is time for them to fill out your Midterm & Final Performance Evaluations - https://msu.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9t1Yl9WS6WN0Q1D

If you have 2 internship sites, both site supervisors must submit a Midterm Performance Evaluation (one from each site).

Due Friday, April 27th 2018 by 5:00pm.

It is YOUR responsibility to get your site supervisor to fill in the Final Performance Evaluations at the correct time. The Final Performance Evaluation is a requirement of this class. If I do not have a Final Performance Evaluation from your site supervisor by the end of the semester, you may receive a 0.0 in KIN 492/493. We understand you may not be finished your internship hours before your supervisor completes the Final Performance Evaluation – this is okay.

All Final Performance Evaluations must be completed by your site supervisor and not you the student.

NOTE: Your site supervisor must click on the link on the KIN 492/493 website and fill out an electronic form for your Final Performance Evaluation. We will not accept Final Performance Evaluations via mail, fax, or email. Late Final Reports will not be accepted after: Monday, April 30th 2018 by 5:00pm.

Please read over the directions provided on D2L. Please download your Final Report to the Dropbox on D2L.
