Job Description Summary:
NatureandScope:
The Equipment Operator I is responsible for carrying out written and oral work orders for the effective maintenance of the grounds, community gardens and interment services for GracelandCemetery.
The Equipment Operator I aides in funeral services (approximately 95 per year), pouring and setting 50 to 70 foundations per year, in addition to various types of landscaping and maintenance work on the 44 acre cemetery where over 15,000 burials have been made since the opening in 1867.
The Cemetery Department is a division of parks and recreation. The position receives direct supervision from the cemetery Foreman II. The position will at times, be required to be acting Foreman II in the absence of the Foreman II.
The incumbent will respond to work orders, complaints or inquiries by the Foreman II, lot owners, funeral directors, clergy people, Director of Parks and Recreation and the general public that may enter into the cemetery grounds.
This position will be responsible for equipment and other tools used, and are required to write letters make telephone calls and personally meet with the public in the absence of the Foreman II.
Requirements:
High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Experience in the use of backhoes, tractors and riding lawnmowers.
Training in vocational agriculture, horticulture or landscaping, and possess or acquire a
pesticide applicators license within 12 months of employment (Core, Turf pest and Ornamental
Weed licenses).
Construction background
Ability to secure the cooperation of others in emotional situations.
