Guidelines

The WR Henderson scholarship has been formed following the creation of the WR Henderson Endowment Fund, as a result of the transfer of the WR Henderson Trust to the University of Edinburgh. Income from this Fund will support a WR Henderson Scholarship which will be awarded annually to one or more undergraduate students (including those in their final study year) to allow them to pursue research aimed at understanding the development, function and diseases of the brain (including the nervous system) within Edinburgh Medical School: Biomedical Sciences, University of Edinburgh. This would normally be undertaken during the summer vacation.

What the WR Henderson Scholarship Provides:

  • A stipend for the student of £180 per week for up to 12 weeks
  • A contribution to the host laboratory of £1000

Eligibility Criteria:

  • You should be an undergraduate student at the time of application, although you may be in your final year of study. You may an undergraduate at any university.
  • Your proposed research project must be in a neuroscience-related field and be undertaken within an Edinburgh Medical School: Biomedical Sciences-based laboratory ( Either the principal investigator, or a postdoc researcher from that laboratory, may supervise your project and support your application.
  • Your proposed research would normally take place between June and September of the year of application.
  • You should be prepared to write a report on the outcome of your research project.
  • Please note: If two or more applications are deemed of equal quality, preference will be given to the student based in a laboratory that has not received Henderson Scholarship funding in previous years.

How to apply:

  • Applications are now open for the 2017 round; deadline for submission is 31st May 2017.
  • Download and complete the application form.
  • Contact your proposed laboratory academic in Edinburgh Medical School: Biomedical Sciences and discuss the project with them before submitting your application. Check they are in BMS:
  • Completed applications should be emailed to Edinburgh Neuroscience ()
  • Successful applicants will be notified by the middle of June 2016
  • Laboratory placements should normally be completed by the end of September in the year of the award
