-They come across a neglected building that seems out of place for the area

-Seeing this building prompts Richard Enfield to tell a horrible story about the person that lives there

-The story is about a young girl of about 8 or 10 that bumps into a horrible deformed creature on the corner of the street. He knocks her over and he “tramples calmly” over her body

-A crowd witnessed this tragic incident and surrounded the horrid man and threatened him to pay the girl’s family compensation or they would make sure everyone hated him.

-He paid some of it in gold (which he got from that strange neglected building) The rest of the money, the deformed creature ( MR HYDE)

, paid in a cheque, however, it was very strange as the name on the cheque was of a very respectable gentleman in the town.

-People are suspicious that the creature (HYDE) is blackmailing the person whose name is on the cheque

-Mr Enfield refuses to say who the creature was but eventually says it was Edward Hyde. Mr Enfield and Mr Utterson vow never to speak of this again.

- In Dr Jekyll’s will it states that in the death or disappearance of himself (Dr Jekyll) that all of his property should go to Edward Hyde

- Because Mr Utterson is worried about Dr Jekyll he goes to visit their mutual friend Dr Lanyon.
- Mr Utterson says he’s worried about Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’s relationship. Dr. Lanyon says he’s never heard of Mr Hyde before and that he (Dr. Lanyon) has fallen out with Dr. Jekyll because of a professional dispute about science.
- Utterson has a nightmare as he is so worried about Jekyll
- Out of concern Mr Utterson starts to hang around where Mr Hyde lives (the neglected building) to find more out about him.
-Mr Utterson confronts Mr Hyde (who is a small man with ugly features) Mr Hyde keeps his head down and hardly says anything

-Utterson identifies the body as Sir Danvers Carew who is a popular member of parliament and is one of Utterson’s clients.

-Utterson took the police to Mr Hyde’s house as he knew that Mr Hyde would have been the murderer.

-They question why Dr Jekyll would be friends with someone that lives in such a run down place

-The police find half of the murder weapon (the stick) and a burnt cheque book.

-They go to the bank and learn that Mr Hyde still has an account there. From the account they find out that Hyde has no family

-On the way out Utterson asks Poole (the butler) who delivered the letter?- Poole says they didn’t have a delivery.

-Mr Utterson takes the letter that Hyde wrote to Mr. Guest who studies the handwriting and says it is the same as Dr Jekyll’s but has purposefully been made to look different.

Chapter 6- Remarkable Incident of Dr. Lanyon

-Jekyll has been much happier, healthier and sociable with his friends

-After 2 months Jekyll hosts a dinner party with his close friends (Utterson and Dr. Lanyon)

-A few days later Utterson visits Jekyll but Poole says he doesn’t want visitors.

-Utterson goes to see Dr Lanyon because he is worried about Jekyll again.

-Lanyon is in poor health and explains he has had a great shock.

-Utterson mentions that Jekyll is also ill Lanyon VIOLENTLY demands never to speak of Jekyll again. No longer friends.

-Lanyon promises after he dies that Utterson will know all about why he is not friends with Jekyll.

-Utterson goes home, writes a letter to Dr J. & asks why him and Lanyon have fallen out.

-Dr J. replies- says he is still fond of Dr L. but he doesn’t want to see ANYBODY because he is punishing himself for something that he did.

-A few weeks later Dr Lanyon dies

-After the funeral Mr U takes the letter that DR. L wrote to reveal all- doesn’t read it yet!!!

-They break down the door to find Hyde’s body dead on the floor- he poisoned himself

-They search the lab and thought it was weird to have a mirror there

-They find 3 things 1) Dr J’s will where Hyde’s name is replaced with Uttersons

-2nd item- a note from Jekyll with today’s date on

-3rd- sealed packet

-Mr Utterson still believes Dr. J is alive – he goes back home to read Lanyon’s letter

Chapter 9- Dr Lanyon’s narrative

-The voice changes from the third person to Dr Lanyon’s point of view

-This chapter is the letter that Lanyon gave Utterson before he died to reveal all about Dr J

- The letter was written after Jekyll’s last dinner party FROM DR JEKYLL TO DR LANYON

- The letter asks Lanyon’s laboratory and instructs him to remove a specific drawer and take it back to Lanyon’s house

- Lanyon was then instructed in the letter to wait for a man who would collect the drawer at exactly midnight.

- The letter was very desperate in tone and Jekyll states that Lanyon shouldn’t ask any questions as he will understand everything soon.

- Lanyon carried out the task- he met Poole and broke into the laboratory at Dr Jekylls house and took that drawer back to his house.

- The drawer had chemicals in and a notebook which had years of experiments in.

-Lanyon waited for his visitor thinking that Jekyll has gone mad

- At midnight an evil looking man with clothes too big for him, came to the door (Mr Hyde) by Lanyon had never met him before so didn’t recognise him! Hyde was nervous and excited.

- Hyde mixed the ingredients in the drawer together and then asked Lanyon whether he wanted to see him drink it. Lanyon said he was already too involved in this so go ahead and drink it.

- Hyde drank from the glass and then he seemed to swell and his body got bigger, his face melting and changing until SHOCKINGLY he turned into Dr Jekyll.

- Lanyon ends the letter here and said that what Jekyll told him after that was too shocking to repeat and that this experience has shocked him so much that he (dr. L) will soon die.

Chapter 10

-In this chapter we are seeing everything that has happened in the novel from DR JEKYLL’s perspective (with some input from Hyde as he is his alter ego) and NOT Mr Utterson.

-All the events in the story that seemed strange or that didn’t quite make sense are all pieced together in this chapter as Dr Jekyll “fills in the gaps”

-Jekyll writes that from birth he has a lot of money, a healthy body and a hard working decent nature.

-He considers himself to be a respectable man in public and hiding his more indecent side away.

-He found himself leading a dual life where his better side felt guilty for his darker side.

-Jekyll insists that “man is not truly one, but truly two” and discusses how he dreamed of separating the good and evil parts of ourselves into 2 separate identities.

-Jekyll states that after much research he found solution that could do this.

-He risked his life by taking the potion, he experienced pains and nausea but the more he did it these symptoms went and he felt reckless and enjoyed it. He had got smaller in size and more deformed as Mr Hyde.

-He thinks that Mr Hyde represents his evil side that he repressed as Dr Jekyll.

-When he looked into the mirror he was not repulsed by what he saw but was delighted.

-Jekyll felt he was too old but as Mr Hyde he felt young and free.

-Jekyll admits that he furnished a home for Mr Hyde and set up a bank account in his name, he enjoyed being a different person it made him feel free.

-He did not feel guilty for what Mr Hyde did as Dr Jekyll felt he was someone else. But Dr Jekyll did try and make right whatever Mr Hyde did wrong.

-2 months before Carew died Jekyll got worried he had started to turn into Hyde without taking the potion it was like Hyde was taking over and he wasn’t in control.

-This made him think he should stop taking the potion as he was at risk of being trapped in Mr Hyde’s body.

-But 2 months later he was tempted again and took the potion and ended up being more reckless and savage. Mr Hyde then killed Carew.

-Hyde showed no remorse or the murder.

-Jekyll was feeling awful and prayed for forgiveness and vowed never to take the potion again.

-Dr Jekyll says he went back to mixing with his friends again and pretend everything was back to normal and he felt well again.

-Eventually Dr Jekyll felt bored with being good and craved for darker desires.

-When he took the potion again he found that he was again not in control of turning back into Mr Hyde.

-As Hyde he felt brave and powerful but Jekyll knew that as Hyde he risked being caught by the police for murdering Carew.

-He could not return to the room to get the potion as Mr Hyde as he was at risk of being capture as the servants would “shop him in”

-Dr Jekyll sends a letter to Lanyon to break into his lab and get the potions for him.

-After that night he had to take a double dose o the potion every 6 hours to avoid transforming into Hyde.

-As soon as the drug began to wear off Dr J would transform back into Mr H. Jekyll explains that this is what happened when Utterson and Enfield saw him at the window that time and that why he went quickly back inside!

-In Dr Jekylls last hours Hyde grew stronger and Jekyll grew weaker. Jekyll explains that the salt necessary for the transformation was running out.

-Jekyll ordered more but the potion didn’t have the same effect.

-Jekyll explained that he was fast becoming Mr Hyde permanently.

-He drank the last of the potion to write this letter (chapter 10) to explain everything.

-He says that by the time Utterson reads this he will be no more!

THE END!

Extra information on chapter 10

-Jekyll explains that he left everything in his will to Hyde earlier in the text (which makes sense now as we know they are the same person!)

-Dr J explains of the brutal murder of Carew

-Dr J clarifies the mystery as to why Hyde and Jekyll’s handwriting is similar.

-He explains why he seemed to get better after Carews murder (as he didn’t turn into Hyde anymore) and then how he was too tempted by the feelings he had as Hyde and got lured back into becoming Hyde again.

-He also explains that Hyde takes over him and that he why he hides himself away as Hyde is wanted for the murder of Carew.

-He explains how he considers the relationship between good and evil.

-Hyde is driven by passion and is evil he represents the dark side of man.

-Jekyll represents the good and evil of man how he cannot give into temptations and the freedom of his evil side.

-Dr Jekyll claims that he tried to get rid of his dark side as himself but the opposite happened as his dark side grew stronger as the novel continues until Dr Jekyll ceased to exist.

-Hyde is smaller than Jekyll and younger which means he is less developed than Jekyll.

-Hyde has physical strength that shows how much power he has.

-Jekyll states that he never feels guilty for the crimes that Hyde commits as that is Hyde and not him.

-Surely Jekyll is responsible for Hyde’s actions though as he is in control of turning into Hyde?
