Mary Immaculate College English Language School offers high quality English language programmes that support non-native English-speaking undergraduate and postgraduate students, both academically and culturally. MIC English Language School offers a range of programmes to suit the academic needs of individual learners.
The teaching staff at MIC English Language School is extremely highly qualified with many years’ teaching experience at third level. Members of the faculty are involved in current research and developments in English language teaching methods and practice. Class numbers are kept low to facilitate individual attention to all students.
MIC English Language School is conveniently located in a leafy suburb just ten minutes’ walk from Limerick city centre, with access to all major routes. The campus is just 20 minutes from Shannon International Airport and near to all the most beautiful scenery and tourist destinations in the Shannon Region e.g. the Cliffs of Moher, Bunratty Castle, etc. Students of MIC English Language School have access to all facilities available on the campus, including study facilities and the sports complex. Accommodation can be arranged for students on campus or within a short walking distance. Courses include a comprehensive orientation and cultural tours.
Preparation for University
The Preparation for University programme has a focus on IELTS and includes the following modules:
· English as a Foreign Language
· English for Academic Purposes
· IELTS Preparation
· English language & Irish Culture
*An IELTS score of 6.5 is the English language requirement for direct entry onto undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at MIC and most institutions. Students may wish to complete a pre-sessional English language programme before commencing full-time studies at Mary Immaculate College or another institution.
Full Academic Year + Foundation Programme
Students who choose to take one academic year of English language can simultaneously take an MIC Foundation course at an additional cost of €1,000. This programme offers an introduction to a selection of Liberal Arts subjects (e.g. Mathematics, English Literature, History, Philosophy, and Theology) and development of academic writing skills. Students who achieve a merit in this one-year programme will gain direct entry to the BA Liberal Arts programme at Mary Immaculate College.
Intensive Programmes
MIC English Language School also runs intensive programmes aimed at current English language students who wish to improve their general English language skills. These are shorter-term beginner and improver courses, with 25 hours of tuition per week, and customised modules as required. Students can choose a 4-, 6-, or 8-week programme throughout the year, at a cost of €230 per week.
