UC Carbon Neutrality Initiative Student Fellowship Program at UCSF

PURPOSE

To support the program development of one to three graduate and health professions students at UCSF to advance the UC Carbon Neutrality Initiative (UCCNI).

Award amount: up to $12,000

Maximum duration: 8 months

Number of awards: 1 to 3

ELIGIBILITY

Applicant must be currently enrolled in a degree program, residency, fellowship, or postdoc program in the Graduate Division, School of Dentistry, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, or School of Pharmacy.

APPLICATION

Cover sheet including: applicant name, degree program, contact email and phone number, recommender’s name, department, email, and phone number.

One page applicant letter describing the program to be completed under the fellowship and how it aligns with the UC Carbon Neutrality Initiative.

At least one fellow will be appointed to lead student engagement and communications efforts at UCSF for the CNI and the President’s Global Climate Leadership Council— see attached Student Engagement Representative document for more detail. This effort will be supported by an additional $1000. If you would like to be considered for the student engagement role in your application, please include a brief description goals and objectives.

One page recommendation letter from a faculty or staff advisor on the project.

SELECTION CRITERIA

One or twopositionswill be selected to lead student engagement and communications efforts at UCSF and the development of a Climate Change and Health Elective sponsored by the Academic Senate Committee on Sustainability or their delegate. See Student Engagement Representative document for more detail. Please include a brief description describing your proposal.

One or two positions will be focused on reducing carbon emissions in healthcare or healthcare research through improving energy efficiency, changing energy intensive processes,reducing anesthesia gas or refrigerant emissions, and/or enactingother related strategies to cut carbon emissions in healthcare.

Preference will be given to programs focused on reducing campus-related emissions to meet net zero greenhouse gases (GHG) from its buildings and vehicle fleet by 2025 (i.e., reduction of GHG emissions related to UCSF’s use of electricity, natural gas, anesthesia gases, refrigerant and vehicle fleet), which is an area of leadership for UCSF within the overall Carbon Neutrality Initiative.

Selections will be made by a committee comprised of members of the Academic Senate Committee on Sustainability.

OTHER

Awardees are expected to attend a system-wide symposium introducing students’ work in October 2016. Details to be determined by the organizing staff in the UC Office of the President.Please review past and current UCSF sustainability activities located at to ensure that your topic is novel.

May 26, 2017 – Winners announced and forward to UCOP

October 2017 – Work begins with attendance at a system-wide orientation

June/July 2018 – Work concludes with presentation and poster at the California Higher Education Sustainability Conference
