About Ant Mobility funding for Organisations, Groups and Companies

1. Introduction

Pro Helvetia Johannesburg, the liaison office of the Swiss Arts Council for Southern Africa, acts as a funding body, advisory body, and co-producer of cultural (exchange) events in Southern Africa or Switzerland.

Pro Helvetia Johannesburg has been mandated to manage funds made available by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). The mandate stipulates that these funds should be used towards arts and culture projects within Southern Africa.

The core purpose of this programme is to make a strategic contribution to building a more connected cultural field in the Southern African region, through supporting transnational collaboration, circulation of relevant new work and professional development.

Through the ANT Mobility (Organisations, Groups, Companies) funding stream Pro Helvetia Johannesburg provides support to bands, performing arts companies, collectives, festivals and organisations who are active in the professional field of arts and culture. We invest modest resources in the ability of people to connect with one another across the region in ways that can then generate new networks, ideas and future projects.

2. Projects and activities that qualify for Ant Mobility Funding

The primary focus of Ant Mobility funding for organisations, groups and companies is to assist these entities to strengthen their SADC regional network and footprint. We support:

●  The circulation of significant and relevant work through music and performing arts tours and exhibitions to audiences across the region

●  Professional development and exchange through workshops, master classes, conferences and meetings

●  Combinations of touring/presentation and professional development/exchange

We are particularly interested in investing in activities that have the potential to have a catalytic effect – prompting new relationships, networks, projects or initiatives that would then have the possibility to develop independently in the future.

Activities should involve mobility between two or more of the following countries:

Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Seychelles, Tanzania (including Zanzibar), Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Successful proposals will be provided with financial support up to a maximum amount of ZAR60 000/US$ 5000 and applicants are expected to seek additional funding from other sources.

We normally only support the following expenditure items:

●  local and international travel within and between the aforementioned countries,

●  accommodation costs (up to a maximum period of one month),

●  reasonable local living expenses/per diems,

●  visa fees where relevant,

●  reasonable travel insurance costs where relevant,

●  administrative costs (not exceeding 5% of the budget),

●  professional, facilitation or management fees (the amount requested from Pro Helvetia should not exceed USD1000/ZAR12 000 and we would normally assume complementary contributions from other parties in addition to our contribution).

Key issues that are taken into account in the evaluation of your proposal include:

●  clarity of intent and the relevance of the proposed activities to the objectives of the Regional Arts Development Programme,

●  artistic merit/quality and the track record of the applicant artistically and professionally,

●  active engagement in the proposal from collaborators/partners/hosts in the countries with which you are engaging, and complementary in-kind or financial support from local collaborators/partners/hosts and other funders or sponsors,

●  the potential for the proposed activities to trigger meaningful and relevant ongoing relationships, networks and activities that can develop in the future independently of our investment.

All projects must be completed by the end of November 2018.

3. Projects that do not qualify for funding

We do not support:

●  Commercial or profit-oriented projects

●  Training of non-professionals

●  Formal education programmes or course fees (eg at schools, colleges or universities)

●  Video/film production (though we can consider supporting content research or development for digital/on-line distribution)

●  Book printing (though we can consider supporting content research or development, or audience led dissemination)

Indicate in the far right column (“Amount covered by Pro Helvetia request”) which of these costs you require Pro Helvetia to support, or partly support.
