1. According to the 12th April Health Service Journal:
· NHS Hospital Deficits: The CEO of NHS Improvement, Jim Mackay, admits the NHS provider sector will not break even in 2017-18 and reaching financial balance in 2018-19 will depend on factors outside trust’s control.
· New tax rules hit contractors / locums and agency nurses: Rules newly in force from HM Revenue and Customs require NHS trusts to deduct and pay tax and national insurance contributions. Some locum doctors are demanding a 50% uplift in pay and contractors are even walking away from lucrative projects!
· RNOH not to merge: A Royal Nation Orthopaedic Hospital Trust spokesman confirmed that his trust has ruled out a full merger with Royal Free London FT, but it could still be run as a franchise or be part of a a chain. It already has a memorandum of understanding with the Royal Free about closer working.
· Cycle of demand and cost inflation: The CEO of NHS England, Simon Stevens, admitted the NHS is trapped in a “reinforcing cycle” of increased demand leading to higher costs. Also “ hospital activity and costs have gone up faster than hospital income”
· Samantha Jones to step down as New Care Models Director: Until two and a half years ago CEO West Herts Hospitals NHS Trust, Sam Jones will step down at the end of May from her current job, to spend more time with her seven year old twins.
