Youth Programs

·  Joseph S. Rumbaugh Historical Patriotic Orations Contest

The MDSSAR 2017 Joseph S. Rumbaugh Historical Patriotic Orations Contest winner was the chapter winner, Yael Hamburger with her oration on Molly Pitcher. Miss Hamburger, a senior at Beth Tfiloh, was presented her medal and check at the chapter meeting on June 3rd by Lou Raborg, MDSSAR Educational Programs Chairman and gave her 5-6 minute oration for the members. She will represent Maryland at the National Congress in Knoxville, TN.

·  Outstanding JROTC Cadet Program

The MDSSAR 2017 Maryland Outstanding JROTC Cadet is C/Col Mark Quesnel of Parkville High School was awarded his medal at the June 3rd meeting by Col. George Satterthwaite, MDSSAR JROTC/ROTC Citizenship Awards Chairman

·  Americanism Elementary School Poster Contest

This year’s theme was "Revolutionary War Person or Persons." The MDSSAR 2017 winner was Miss Elizabeth Suarez of Our Lady of Hope/ St. Luke School will receive a certificate and check for her Revolutionary Era person poster on Molly Pitcher. Her poster will represent Maryland at the National Congress in Knoxville, TN.

·  Americanism Middle School Brochure

The State Second Place winner of the Sgt Moses Adams Memorial Middle

School Brochure Contest with a certificate and check was Madison Cote of Our Lady of Hope/ St. Luke School for her brochure on The Federalist Papers, sponsored by our chapter.

·  Patriot Defender Program

The Chapter- sponsored Patriot-Defender Program was a great success. The chapter provided 470 certificates for West Towson Elementary. Their Memorial Day Program has been frequently cited as being one to emulate. In addition to our participation, American Legion Post 22 presented American and Maryland flags to the Patriots (4th grade) and Defenders (5th grade). In addition, State Senator Brochin provided special certificates for the Defenders who had completed all six levels of the program. The DAR, Maryland Line Chapter sponsored a poster and an essay contest, the winner being announced at the Assembly.

The induction of our 2017 – 2018 Executive Committee was held June 3rd, 2017 at Edenwald Retirement Community, 2nd Floor, 800 Southerly Road, Towson.

Manager Chris Christou has resigned his membership in the Col. Nicholas Ruxton Moore chapter in order to devote all his time to the John Eager Howard chapter.

Baltimore Council Councilman David Marks spoke to the Chapter about the various historic preservation projects currently occupying the Council. The Towson Presbyterian Home will be converted in senior living apartments, maintaining the existing exterior.

Perry Hall Manor has had its exterior preservation and is currently awaiting new tenants. The Wayside Cross, commemorating World War I, at the corner of York Avenue and Shealey Road, is in need of restoration and preservation. The Council is currently seeking funds for this. Councilman Marks was awarded the Bronze Good Citizenship Award for his efforts in Historic preservation and support of county school’s patriotic assemblies.

Outgoing Chapter President James G Bigwood was awarded a Past President pin and certificate for his service and historical focus for two years.
