Course aims:
·  Provide a basic introduction to the history and idea of human rights
·  Introduce key rights and relate these to current issues and concerns
·  Empower participants to make use of human rights in campaigning and lobbying
·  Assess the role and relevance of human rights in today’s political climate
Course description:
The course provides an introduction to human rights and looks at how they can be used to campaign on specific issues.

Learning outcomes: these are the intended outcomes and may be revised in discussion with the class. Students are encouraged to think about and identify their own individual outcomes.
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
1.  Explain the role of human rights in setting basic standards
2.  Identify different rights and understand government commitments
3.  Recognise and describe the importance of public campaigns and some of the historical struggles for rights
4.  Make use of the Human Rights Act in relevant cases
5.  Shape campaigns using human rights
