Highlighter

Paper

Sit quietly at chair

Raise hands for questions

Gain attention!

Ask students about the types of forests they already know about. Example might be the obvious rain forests…. Probe for prior knowledge.

Review (Previous Lesson / skill): Remind students about photosynthesis and transpiration, ask about the key elements trees need to process their food and make oxygen. Relate this to their knowledge of the types of forests.

Body of Lesson:

Procedures & Activities Specific examples/questions

Activity #1: (Model) Introduce the three world biomes by name briefly. Then give examples of how to read the text and take notes from it.

Ex: The three main forest biomes of the world are the Taiga/Boreal of the arctic, the Temperate Deciduous Forest, and the Tropical Rain Forest near the equator region. Put the Conifer Forest Biome information on the board, read and underline important notes: such as where it is locate, the temperature, the plants, and animals living there.

Activity #2: (Lead/Test) Organize into groups: lead student (strong readers) paired with students who need a bit of guidance. Students choose their forest biome. Hand out guides for note taking.

Activity #3: (Test) Students present their notes on the white board about the key information regarding the forests. They will also color in the area on the map designating their forest.

Closing/Transition:

·  Review: Briefly review the forests, where they are, the animals located there. Show slide show of pictures.

·  Preview: Tell students that on Monday, the focus will lie on Oregon forests. So get ready with ideas, and observe the trees, animals and life around their neighborhoods, and backyards.

Follow-up Activity/Independent Work:

·  Transition Instructions / Expectation
