Whereas, with mixed emotions, the members of the House of Representatives have learned that Larry “David” Cunningham of Bath, South Carolina, is retiring from state service as the Chief of the Bath Fire Department; and
Whereas, Chief Cunningham joined the Bath Fire Department fifty years ago as a young man of seventeen years of age; and
Whereas, Chief Cunningham has served as Chief of the Bath Fire Department for the past thirty years; and
Whereas, throughout his employment with the department, Chief Cunningham has seen the department grow from one small station to two full stations serving the entire district; and
Whereas, under Chief Cunningham’s leadership, the Bath Fire Department was able to modernize with new engines, rescue trucks, brush trucks, rescue tools, air bags, and other safety equipment, thereby dropping the district’s insurance rating down to a class four and saving district residents insurance premiums; and
Whereas, the new headquarters station was named in his honor last year. This new headquarters station has room for all the trucks, workshop, training and community rooms, and bedrooms for twelve firefighters; and
Whereas, under Chief Cunningham the department started the first responder program to aid the citizens with quicker medical attention. This part of the department has grown and makes up about seventy percent of the calls; and
Whereas, Chief Cunningham has been a father figure to his personnel, tirelessly looking out for their welfare both on and off duty, and because of Chief Cunningham’s example, many of these have chosen careers in public safety; and
