ANNUAL DUES AND NEW MEMBER FEES – AN UPDATE FOR KIWANIS CLUBS

INTERNATIONAL BOARD OF TRUSTEES, and GOVERNORS, GOVERNORS-ELECT and DISTRICT SECRETARIES in North America will find enclosed a sample letter to be mailed to clubs in US and Canada in the next General Mailing on May 25. The communication explains in greater detail the new member fee and annual dues billing system and process, and provides examples for each billing group as to how and when clubs will be charged for new members.

INTERNATIONAL BOARD DISCUSSION AND ACTION

APRIL 26-29, 2006

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA

The following are highlights of discussion and action taken by the International Board of Trustees at its April 2006 meeting. More details will be found in the Official Minutes, which are scheduled for distribution on May 26.

GENERAL

Approved minutes of the Board of Trustees meeting held in Orlando, Florida, January 8, 2006.

Approved minutes of the Executive Committee Conference Call of March 15, 2006.

Approved the list of 2006-07 International Committees and Chairmen.

Received the report of the Past International Presidents.

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

Approved the Administrative Action Report on new clubs, club name changes and mergers, clubs recommended for charter revocation, etc.

Approved partial expense reimbursement of Bylaws and Resolutions Committee Chairman for participation in the International Convention.

Received an update on the Kiwanis International Foundation’s capital campaign and plans for a formal kickoff of the campaign at the Montréal Convention.

Reviewed status of the pension plan termination and changes in the 401(k) plan.

Received an update on the progress of applications for 501(c)(3) status.

Approved recommendations for prioritization and funding levels of current grant requests to the Kiwanis International Foundation.

Received an update on the fundraising and bid process for the Robert G. Moorhead auditorium.

Received a report from the Executive Director Search Committee, which has participated in a training session on interviewing techniques and hired the executive search firm Tryon and Heideman; the committee plans to interview candidates in the next several months and have an Executive Director in place by October 1.

Approved changes to International Board Travel Policy to clarify procedures.

Approved the deadline of midnight, September 30, for assessment of each administrative year’s membership numbers.

Approved the appointment of Richard B. Arnold of East Berlin, Pennsylvania, to the position of International Board Financial Advisor, effective October 1, 2006, and continuing for no less than two full Kiwanis administrative years.

Repealed Sections 525 and 526 of Board Procedures to provide more flexibility to Circle K International site selection and programming for its conferences and conventions.

FINANCE

Reviewed the February 2006 Financial Summary with explanations of the variances.

Approved amendments to Board Procedures to comply with approved budget allocations and subsidies to Circle K, Key Club, and Kiwanis International Foundation.

Approved amending the Board Procedure on investments as recommended by investment advisor Smith Barney.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

Approved two amendments to the Key Club International Board Policies adopted by the Key Club International Board, regarding campaigning at conventions and awarding of the service scholarship.

Requested Staff to update the existing Code of Ethics and Responsibilities for Adults Working with Youth in Kiwanis-family Sponsored or Related Activities and determine costs for a pocket resource booklet for all Kiwanians and adults working with children and youth.

Requested Staff to prepare a plan to utilize opportunities including new membership categories and club models that would be permitted by the amendment pending before the 2006 House of Delegates to create provisional, interim, or at-large Kiwanis membership status for Key Club and Circle K members upon graduation or when otherwise eligible.

Requested Staff to review the possibility of inviting Key Club International talent contest participants to perform at the Kiwanis International Convention if the sponsoring club or district assumes the costs of attendance.

STRUCTURE

Approved limiting dual and seed membership in new Kiwanis clubs to five members, to strengthen the viability of newly formed clubs.

Requested Staff to create and implement a new club building process to target graduating Circle K members.

Adopted a goal of 5,000 Life Members and asked Staff to develop a plan and support materials to achieve this goal.

Reviewed amendments and resolutions submitted for consideration by the 2006 House of Delegates.

Requested Staff to develop duties for the International Committee on Resolutions and Bylaws and create submission procedures for Board consideration.

Approved submission by the Board of an amendment to the International Bylaws to change the deadline for submitting amendments and resolutions from April 1 to January 15.

Approved submission by the Board of an amendment to the International Bylaws allowing Kiwanis International to experiment with new types of Kiwanis clubs and programs to determine how these models can contribute to our vision of One Million Members.

OUR VOICE

Approved continuing Kiwanis International’s accreditation as a nongovernmental organization with the United Nations Economic and Social Council and the Department of Public Information.

Approved a limited introduction of the Kiwanis branding campaign into Europe, Latin America, and Asia-Pacific, and the public relations campaign into Indonesia and Korea in the Asia-Pacific region.

Approved the preparation of an amendment to create an annual per-club convention fee for consideration by the 2007 House of Delegates.

Approved the location of the 2011 Kiwanis International Convention in a European city that meets Kiwanis International’s selection criteria.
