ACTIVITIES DIRECTIONS:

II. Challenge Reports.

Use the challenge questions themselves as process questions

III. Warm Up. Relapse Trigger Relay Race

  • Divide into 2 teams – each team lines up at the back of the room
  • Write the words drinking and drugging or smoking if one team has fewer members (with room to write next to each letter) on each side of the board
  • Give a piece of chalk to the first person in each line – the person goes to the board and writes a situation or event that might trigger that activity starting with one of the letters in the word – returns and hands the chalk to the next person
  • Team members may help only when the person with the chalk is in the line – once the person leaves the line, there can be no more talking in that team
  • The letters do not have to be completed in order, but the teams must stay in order
  • No trigger activity can be the same as the activity on the other team’s list

IV. Maintenance and Relapse Presentation and Discussion.

  • Review the information in the book on these 2 stages

V. Relapse Management Role Plays – Part 1

  • Review Relapse Prevention Principles
  • Divide into groups of two or three
  • Role Play Relapse Situations using Relapse Maintenance Worksheets – stress the importance of writing down behavior not impressions – it is ok for this exercise to write as you talk
  • Debrief in large group with counselor giving example of person’s greatest strength and most worrisome limitation

VII. Relapse Management Role Plays – Part 2

  • Counselor assists client in developing a Maintenance Plan
  • Debrief with questions about how hard/easy it was to let client develop plan
  1. Relapse Management Role Plays – Part 3
  • The client has relapsed and returns to the counselor
  • Review Maintenance Plan and what did not work
  • Counselor uses Problem Solving to revise plan
  1. Maintaining Change Awareness Activity
  • Each person completes Awareness Worksheet
  • Discussion of the differences for different activities
