INVERNESS REPORT – JANUARY 2013

Inverness just scraped by with just one more visitor than January last year, and again, in spite of what hit most of the UK we got away snow free, although just over at Aberdeen, snow and fog sent us some diversions.

There were problems on the 12th when freezing fog effectively closed the airport to all arrivals, but being a Saturday there weren’t too many scheduled flights to be bothered! The 24 hour battering that Scotland took from the wind in the last week wasn’t a problem as luckily it blew almost straight along the runway, that’s not to say that some passengers didn’t require clean underwear!

NEW HELICOPTER BASE AT INVERNESS

It was definitely a month for helicopters with no fewer than 19, including 6 S-92As paying us a visit, mostly as Aberdeen weather diversions. On that subject is the good news that from 4th February for 3 months Bristow Helicopters will have a training base at Inverness for S-92A SAR helicopter crews. They will be operating a temporary contract until 2017 while a decision is made as to who will take over SAR operations from the MoD. Hangar 2 has been set aside for their use and the first helicopter due on Monday will be G-MCGA although hopefully we will see others as they are delivered. By the beginning of June one will be based at each of Stornoway and Sumburgh.

Edited from the daily reports:

1st: Nothing new to start the month, but Easyjet provided three extra flights today.

2nd: Only one of note G-EPGI Ce 560XLS here on its third visit.

3rd: Nothing of note on a very mild day.

4th: After visiting for the last few days using its registration as callsign, R-44 G-CEST departed today as “SCOTIA 44”.

5th: There was another Easyjet “seasonal” extra today.

6th: Just two regular singles today and another extra Easyjet.

7th: Only regular PC-12 PH-DIX today!

8th: Eight days in and our 1st new visitor when S-92A G-CHKI arrived for some circuit training.

10th: Apart from a GAMA ambulance, AS.332L G-TIGV diverted in late on, and that was it!

11th: The mild spell is over as Inverness hit -3 today. GAMA are trying to keep the landing fees going with 3 visits from G-SASC today, and our second new visitor of the year with another S-92A G-CHMJ doing some training.

12th: Freezing fog kept the RVR down to 400m or below and there were no arrivals today.

13th: The fog cleared to allow Beech C90 G-MOSJ to make two visits and Sea King XZ585 called for fuel. Gulfstream 450 N608D made a first visit tonight although the frame 4152 was here this time last year as N451JC.

14th: Snow in Aberdeen brought 6 diversions amongst which Emb.145 G-CGWV was a first visit.

15th: SR-22 N21UK called in a couple of times and there were 5 diversions from Aberdeen due to freezing fog there.

16th: No Aberdeen diversions today so today consisted of departures and a visit from RAF 125 ZD621.

17th: Two visitors today were Be 90 G-MOSJ and Ce 560XLS CS-DFR.

18th: Compared to “down south” there was next to no snow in Inverness but delays occurred due to the problems in England causing the EZY Bristol and the BEE Birmingham to be cancelled. A nice visitor was Ce T303 G-DOLY here on its 3rd visit.

19th: Still no snow here and no aircraft either!

20th: No fewer than five ambulance flights today including two 1st visits. The frame of King Air G-FLYW has been here in no fewer than 3 other guises (see twins) and PA31 G-OETV was one of 3 of type to visit today. The weather in England continued to disrupt services today including cancellation of the Easyjet from Gatwick.

23rd: A frequent visitor to Aberdeen, Gulfstream I-DLGH diverted into Inverness for its 1st visit today due to snow in Aberdeen. In the evening was a rare visit from a Prestwick SAR Sea King ZA134.

24th: It was almost the last movement of the day that provided a new visitor when G-FBJI arrived operating the BEE from Gatwick.

25th: Snow in Aberdeen this morning sent us 11 diversions, 10 of which were helicopters including a first visit from S-92A G-XCII. That was a total of 6 S-92As and 4 Pumas all but 2 of which were parked on runway 12/30. One that was meant to be here was PC-12 LX-LAB, here on its second visit. As for the snow, we missed it again!

26th: There were only 2 visitors today, both Cessna 152s. One was a Kinloss regular, the other a first visit from G-BZWH.

27th: Another S-92A today when Coastguard G-CGMU called for training. Another visitor was Beech B200 M-EGGA here on its 4th visit, the others all being at the end of January in 2009, 2011 and 2012.

28th: A very quiet day!

29th: Gulfstream 450 I-DLGH was back again for its second visit, before the wind picked up at tea time, turning it into a very gusty evening! It was so gusty in fact that JS.41 G-MAJA had to divert in when it couldn’t land at Wick due to the cross-winds there.

30th: A positively evil day with a mean wind of 30kt and gusts over 45kt. The only visitor today was Learjet D-CTWO here for the 2nd time.
