GRADE 5 LESSON31
Tech Sense 1 – Internet Alert
GRADE 5 LESSON31
Time Required: 30-45 minutes
Content Standards:
AA.S.1Students will acquire attitudes, knowledge, and skills
that contribute to effective learning in school and across
the lifespan.
AA.S.9Students will understand safety and survival skills and
apply coping strategies.
Indicators:
AA.A.5.1.10 Use the internet as a resource and learning tool.
AA.PSD.5.9.10 Learn and employ internet safety guidelines.
GOAL: Students will learn and utilize internet safety guidelines.Activity Statements:
Students will demonstrate their understanding of how to safely use the internet by participating in an interactive assessment to measure their knowledge. The discussion will focus on the internet as both a useful resource and a potential source of unsafe experiences.
Materials:
- Handout 1 - Internet Safety Quiz(adapted from
- Handout 2 – Tips for Safe Surfing (from (or link electronically for review)
- Additional information from Internet safety links (see resources) as needed
- Paper and pencil
Procedures:
- Begin with Handout 1 – Internet Safety Quiz. Ask students to answer questions within a designated number of minutes (approximately five, but the teacher should determine the number of minutes to put students “on the clock”).
- After students have completed the quiz, the teacher will read each question and ask students to displaytheir answers by holding up fingers to indicate the number of their response. For example, if the student’s answer is 1, he will hold up one (appropriate) finger, two fingers if his answer is 2, etc. The teacher quickly glances to determine student responses then moves on the next without discussion.
- After students respond non-verbally to all of the questions, the teacher will reveal the correct response for eachquestion and ask students to check their own work.
- After each question, the teacher will lead a discussion about why these answers are the correct responses.
- The teacher will use Handout 2 – Tips for Safe Surfing to continue the discussion about internet safety.
- Upon completion of discussion, the teacher will ask the class if there are any questions for which there should be further discussion.
Discussion:
- What is an AUP (Acceptable Use Policy) and what is its purpose?
- Why are internet rules and guideline necessary?
- What are potential Internet safety issues?
- Why should students be aware of internet safety?
- What should you do if you encounter any of these potential Internet situations?
- Were you surprised by any of the “Tips for Safe Surfing”?
- Are there “Internet Safety Quiz” questions we should further investigate?
Alternate Lesson:
