  1. Update on the History–Social Science Framework for California Public Schools (Information)
Staff will provide an update on the editing and rollout of the framework.
  1. 2017History–Social Science Instructional Materials Adoption (Information/Action)
  1. Recommendation of Instructional Materials Reviewers (IMRs) and Content Review Experts (CREs)
Applications to serve as IMRs and CREs for the 2017 History–Social Science Adoption have been submitted for consideration by the Instructional Quality Commission (IQC), which will recommend applicants to the State Board of Education (SBE)for appointment at theirJanuary 2017 meeting. The majority of IMRs must be current K–12 classroom teachers, and each CRE must have a Ph.D. in history or a related field of social science. Commissioners received complete reviewer applications and applicant resumes with personal contact information redacted. Those applications were provided to Commissioners as Attachment 1 and are available for public viewing upon request.
  1. Recommendation of Evaluation Criteria Maps and Content Standards Maps
The evaluation criteriaand content standardsadopted by the SBE for the 2017History–Social Science Adoption have been organized into tablesfor convenient use by publishers and reviewers in the evaluation of submitted instructional materials programs. The evaluation criteria maps and standards maps have been provided digitally to Commissioners and have been posted as Attachment 2 to this item.
  1. ApproveList of Trainers, Non-Commissioner Facilitators, and Training Materials
The IQC will hold training for reviewers of materials submitted for the 2017History–Social Science Adoption on April 24–28, 2017, at the DoubleTree Hotel in Sacramento. The California Code of Regulations requires that the Commission recommend a list of trainers to the SBE for approval. The list includes several program consultants from the Curriculum Frameworks and Instructional Resources Division who will serve as panel facilitators in the event that there are insufficient Commissioners to serve in that role.
The training will be conducted by Commissioners and members of the California Department of Education staff. Commissioners received digital copies of the contents of the training binder, which includes an agenda, three days of presentations, practice pieces, various forms and templates, and other materials. Many of these items are not final because the specific information needed to complete them will not be available until after publishers have submitted their programs for consideration for adoption in 2017. The list of trainers and the training agenda has been posted as Attachment 3 to this item.
