  • The Olympic Flag was brought into the Opening Ceremony by the following: Haile Gebrselassie (ETH), distance running champion; Ban Ki-Moon (KOR), UN Secretary-General; Doreen Lawrence (GBR), anti-racism activist; Sally Becker (GBR), human aid worker in Bosnia and Kosovo; Shami Chakrbarti (GBR), civil liberties activist; Daniel Barenboim (ISR), pianist; Marina Silva (BRA), environmentalist; and Leyman Gbowee (LBR), Nobel Peace Prize winner; accompanied by Muhammad Ali (USA), The Greatest.
  • While some of those flagbearers are not well know, they are better known than the eight who brought in the Olympic Flag to the 1980 Lake Placid Opening Ceremony. They were John Philbrook, CliffWhite, PaulO'Keefe, MarieFerrante McBride, Michael Motherway, Rich Michaud, DavidGoss, and Chris Langlois, of the 27th Lancers Drum and Bugle Corps of Revere, Massachusetts. The flag was supposed to be borne in by local Boy Scouts but they were unable to control the flag so these eight members of the Drum and Bugle Corps, who were performing at the Opening Ceremony, were enlisted to bring in the flag.
