Online Instructional Technologist 2

CLASS TITLE: ONLINE INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGIST

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the Faculty Director of Online Education, configure and administer the district’s Course Management Systems (CMS); provide a wide range of technical support for faculty, staff and students in online educational technologies; and test, implement, evaluate and support the integration of online educational technologies with the college course management website and systems.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

1.  Administer, maintain and operate the district’s CMS to ensure faculty, staff and students’ accessibility and ease of use; enhance student interaction with each other as well as faculty and course materials; ensure all online courses are ADA compatible. (E)

2.  Administer CMS to include the maintenance of user roles, workflow, guidelines for course development, HTML templates and course archives; coordinate all online education CMS to conform with district IT security standards in conjunction with Academic Information Services (AIS). (E)

3.  Develop and maintain CMS architecture, especially integration of student information systems ensuring prompt update of all classes and class rosters, in the CMS system, coordinated with AIS. (E)

4.  For the Online Education department, monitor and respond to CMS support requests involving technical or instructional issues; online or in person diagnose a wide variety of issues; when appropriate, create customized screencast videos for users; support the Student Helpdesk as Tier 2 support in resolving complex functional and technical issues. (E)

5.  Provide faculty, staff and student system users with informational and technical support; advise on the design of online and web-enabled instructional materials for faculty; assist in constructing instructional materials for faculty; develop and deliver periodic in-person and online workshops for effective practices and system features when using digital tools. (E)

6.  Adjust configurations and build images for instructional equipment such as tablets, iPads, computers and laptops; maintain specialized software and audio/visual equipment for the Teaching/Technology Innovation Center (TIC) lab; support users and equipment checkout for the TIC. (E)

7.  Develop and maintain detailed technical documentation of systems functionalities and operations; propose and document procedures to achieve and maintain a high-quality online education system. (E)

8.  Administer the TIC website; upgrade technical components of the system, as required.

9.  Research and develop academic uses for new and emerging technologies; research and propose software and hardware purchases; perform an analysis of developing system proposals to meet functional requirements, recommendations and specifications for cost effective and efficient solutions.

10.  Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

General operating system architecture, characteristics, capabilities, constraints and commands applicable to an academic technology environment.

General principles, practices and methods of systems administration and maintenance, including configuration.

Methods and techniques of systems troubleshooting and problem resolution.

Applicable programming languages and security protocols including design techniques and concepts for web-based technologies.

General database management systems and software, including architectures, diagnostic tools, commands and utilities.

Website usability concepts, such as navigational aids, knowledge management and information rendering.

Principles and practices of sound business communication in a college environment.

Multiple methods of delivering instruction to faculty, staff and students.

Local, state and federal regulations, including terminology and processes applicable to areas of assigned responsibility.

District organization, functions, rules, policies and procedures applicable to assigned areas of responsibility.

Applicable copyright rules and regulations.

Information security policies and practices.

Written and oral communication skills including correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.

ABILITY TO:

Analyze functional requirements for the development of systems proposals, specifications and recommendations for efficient, cost-effective technology solutions.

Conceptualize practical and creative technology solutions to meet college and faculty requirements.

Plan and complete projects efficiently and in accordance with college quality standards.

Develop and conduct effective user training.

Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.

Work independently with little direction.

Use the web for developing and posting instructional materials.

Operate a computer and standard business software.

Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic and disability issues.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all those encountered in the course of work.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree and three years of experience in the development and administration of systems and web-based technology.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid California driver license; District approved DMV driving record

WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

No permanent staff assigned. Project-based lead responsibility.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Primarily sedentary with intermittent standing, walking, bending and stooping; occasional light lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 35 pounds; ability to work at a computer, including repetitive use of a computer keyboard, mouse and other control devices; ability to travel to a variety of locations on and off campus as needed to conduct district business.

EMOTIONAL EFFORT:

Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving appropriate interactions and communications personally, by phone and in writing with a variety of individuals and/or groups of individuals from diverse backgrounds on a regular, on-going basis; ability to concentrate on detailed tasks for extended periods of time and/or intermittently while attending to other responsibilities; ability to work effectively under pressure on a variety of tasks concurrently while meeting established deadlines and changing priorities.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Primarily works in an office environment; subject to frequent public contact and interruption; intermittent exposure to individuals acting in a disagreeable fashion. May work in any district location or authorized facility during day and/or evening hours with occasional evening, weekend and/or holiday hours required on an as-needed basis. Occasional local travel may be requested.
