1. Main feature and key findings from AHS in Assam

Assam constitute:

•  2.6% of country’s Population

•  2.7% of Births

•  3.5% of Infant Deaths

•  3.5% of Under 5 Deaths in bigger States

•  4.5% of Maternal Deaths in bigger States

Main Features of AHS in Assam

  Coverage- All the 23 districts ( as per 2001 Census)

  Sample Units- 1784 statistically selected sample unit (Census Enumeration Blocks in urban areas and Villages or a part thereof in rural areas)

  Sample Population- About 17.81 Lakh

  Sample Households - About 3.86 Lakh

  Reference Period for Fertility and Mortality Indicators: Baseline (2010-11) :2007-2009

Key Findings from AHS 2011-12 in Assam

§  2 districts have recorded TFR of above 3.1

§  22 districts are reporting less than 50% current usage of any modern method of family planning

§  In 6 districts, the unmet need for Family Planning is 20% or more ( In Karimganj district, the unmet need for Family Planning is 33.6 %)

§  Percentage of female Marriages taking place below legal age (18 years) is twice in rural areas as compared to urban areas.

§  Despite wider penetration of `Any ANC’, the coverage under `first trimester ANC’ as well as `3 or more ANCs’ needs further improvement.

§  Poor achievement of full ANC is primarily due to low IFA consumption.

§  Just over 68.1%, of the deliveries are safe

§  About 34.7% of mother have not received any PNC.

•  61.4% of the children are fully immunized

•  Higher levels of IMR and MMR in Assam as compared to all India average

•  3 Districts have Sex Ratio at Birth less than 900

•  Improvement has been noticed in most of the indicators as compared to DLHS-3 and AHS Baseline.

•  Availability of indicators on various facets of Mother & Child Care, fertility and mortality at the district level would provide new insight in evidence-based planning and facilitate appropriate interventional strategies
